Hobby Lobby’s ‘offensive’ decoration has gone bonkers viral — 33k Facebook reactions and counting

Daniell Rider, a Hobby Lobby consumer, found a decoration at one of their stores so offensive, she shared the image on Facebook requesting that they remove the decor from their shelves. What was it?

Rider on Thursday shared a photo of a shelf with glass bottles containing what appear to be replicas of raw cotton plants.

She captioned the photo, “This decor is WRONG on SO many levels. There is nothing decorative about raw cotton… A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves.”

“A little sensitivity goes a long way,” she added. “PLEASE REMOVE THIS ‘decor.'”

What kind of outcry occurred?

After Rider shared the post, it garnered viral attention on Facebook.

At the time of this writing, the post has been “liked” 33k times, has received 76k comments, and has been shared nearly 7k times.

The reaction was split — some commenters supported Rider’s outrage and wrote things like, “What do you expect from HL!!!? NEVER shop there!” while others couldn’t find the offense in the innocuous-looking decoration.

One commenter wrote, “Ummm… it’s cotton… wtf…its 2017… do you know some slaves in 2017 that picked this cotton and didn’t get paid for it. Just… stop.” Some perspective

Art is art, and visual decor falls into that category.

Visually stimulating productions of art — whether worthy of The Louvre, or simply available at your local craft store — is created with intent and meant for interpretation.

Art’s intent is to be stimulating, and oftentimes meant to be a conversation piece in order to trigger important conversations.

Art can also be art for the sake of visual appreciation. There doesn’t necessarily need to be a deep meaning behind it.

While artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock are widely different, each represents an unconventional aspect of art appreciation which some may “get,” while others may not.

If a more "hip" "progressive" store like Target offered this same type of decor would this hypersensitive snowflake utter a peep of protest? Or if Ben and Jerry's released a new flavor and called it something like "Cotton Pickin" Caramel WATERMELON swirl" betcha she'd eat up that overpriced swill until she went into a diabetic coma.

Yet another example of getting offended for the sake of getting offended. Kinda like emotional meth. It gives one a short term sense of empowerment. A temporary feeling of moral superiority. but once that high wears off the need for that next "fix" becomes progressively more insatiable. What a pathetic self destructive way to go through life.

They won’t allow it.

How do we know she’s a “Hobby Lobby consumer?” Has she shown anyone a receipt?

There was another story in the news a couple of days ago about the “offensiveness” of cotton. Maybe this little person heard about that, and found a way to get some attention.

Eh sorry, they topped themselves with the "Banana Peel Lynchin' rope" reaction.

An event was canceled because of some student thought a banana peel that was littered in a tree was suppose to be an allusion to a hanging.

That was truly unbelievable.

These weak men will make for some hard times coming.

Besides, the tree huggers tell us using cotton is more eco friendly. Oh, yeah the enviro movement is overwhelmingly WHITE, never mind.

I’ve become convinced that...

1. Two groups of people with significantly different AVERAGE IQs, and

2. Whose members can easily be identified as belonging to one group or the other,

cannot peacefully coexist together.

> What is so offensive about a plant? <

Liberals can find something offensive about anything. Consider the apple tree. George Washington chopped one of those down. And George Washington owned slaves.

Therefore, an apple tree is a symbol of slavery. Anyone who owns an apple tree (or has a picture of one) supports slavery.

I suspect this new obsession with anti-cotton was dreamed up by one of the many outlets run by the left. They had to create some new diversion after the failure of “anti-fascism fascists”. I guess Eric Holder and his BLM troops need something to rail against, why not the cotton that southern slaves picked 150 years ago? It’s as irrational as suggesting that violent thugs are victims.

Can't wear cotton because of slavery.

Can't wear wool, leather, cashmere, fur or anything made from animals because they are furry little friends for loving and not wearing.

Can't wear polyester because it is made from petroleum and would make Dick Cheney money.

Can't wear bamboo because you would starve a panda.

Can't wear fig leaves because it is too Biblical.

I guess linen and hemp fiber are the only clothes to wear.
