(vanity) TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS ('70S) ROUND 1
me | 1/14/18 | me

Posted on 01/14/2018 7:57:12 PM PST by the OlLine Rebel

OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '70S.

The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '70s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is not based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity.

The rules in general will be to vote for everything shown.

NO equivocating, ties, or omissions. Votes will ONLY be counted if the "ballot" is COMPLETE.

*ROUND 1*

We begin by taking the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up brackets of 64 for the rest of the contest).

1970 "I'll Be There" The Jackson 5
1971 "Go Away Little Girl" Donny Osmond
1972 "Lean on Me" Bill Withers
1973 "Crocodile Rock" Elton John
1974 "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" MFSB
1975 "Fame" David Bowie
1976 "Love Machine" The Miracles
1977 "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
1978 "Baby Come Back" Player
1979 "Hot Stuff" Donna Summer

*Rules for Round 1:*

Place ALL 10 songs in order of your preference. NO TIES. NO OMISSIONS (as in, "I hate this song so much I refuse to list it"). Such "ballots" will not be counted. ALL 10 songs must be listed.

Songs will be awarded points from 9 points for the #1 song on your list, to 0 for the last.

Each song will be prioritized by point total - greatest # points is #1, etc. Ties will have a run-off.

I will give a week for this round before we go to brackets, to garner more interest and votes, and test how much time may usually be needed. I plan on a week span for every round but may change as needed.

(NOTE: one does not have to play every single round to participate, although that would be preferred!)

DUE DATE: Sunday Jan 21 @6:00

Too much work for me - but of the list showing, I guess I’d pick 1978 “Baby Come Back” by Player as the best - for what it’s worth which here is probably worth nothing...

Man I guess I never glimmered on to the fact that Top 40 was so crappy in the '70's. I hope the choices are better when you go to brackets.

I will say I wasn’t a big fan of disco, but at least “Hot Stuff” had a decent guitar solo.

All of these rules, clauses and conditions may be putting some people off from contributing.
As you may recall, part of the charm for most 70’s music was nonconformity or self determination.

Anywhoo...
1. MacArthur Park (any of three versions).
2. Something/Anything, Todd Rundgren
3. It’s Gonna Take a Miracle; by Laura Nyro backed by Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles.
4. Me and My Arrow by Harry Nilsson
5. Can’t Live Without You, Harry Nilsson.
6. That’s the way I’ve Always heard it should be, by Carly Simon.
7. Theme from Shaft, Issac Hayes
8. Barry White (anything)
9. Love and Happiness, by Al Green
10. Bee Gees (anything)

Done it before. Using Billboard songs.

Sorry, no personal entries. Must stick to those listed - thanks to Billboard!

Sorry, guess I’m just not that interested. I’d pick what I think is the best, but that’s about it for me.

Have fun.

I don't care to participate in this contest, because none of those songs interest me. I will tell you a true story about a near riot at an elementary school in Valdosta GA in the early '70s.

All the girls liked the Osmonds, and all the boys liked the Jackson 5. I guess some little argument broke out where one group was saying, 'Down with the Osmonds, up with the Jackson 5', and another group was saying, 'Up with the Osmonds, down with the Jackson 5'.

Pretty soon, some 400 kids were screaming at each other.

I was just on the periphery watching all this, and some girl got in my face screaming. Took the whole faculty to calm it down.

Anyway, just a somewhat amusing story, tangentially related to your post... 8~)
