Gun walkouts in schools don't let students think for themselves
Fox News ^ | March 15, 2018 | John R Lott Jr

Gun control is a contentious issue. It is one thing for a teacher to talk to his or her class about the issue, hopefully presenting both sides of the debate. But a rally on school property, featuring student speeches and attendance by school administrators and teachers, is something quite different.

My daughter is a junior in high school, and her high school participated in Wednesday’s National School Walkout. On Monday the principal assured parents and students that the event wouldn’t be political, that it would just be a memorial commemorating the 17 people murdered at a Parkland, Florida high school a month earlier.

With her peers jumping at the chance to get out of class, my daughter felt pressure to go. She figured it would be OK, given that the principal promised that the event would just be a memorial for the victims. If she were the only student not to skip class, her teacher wouldn’t be able to go. Did she really want to be that lone student? What would her friends think and what might they infer about her political views?

The event turned political, with what appeared to be professionally written speeches mirroring the normal rhetoric that one hears from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety: that respect for the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution doesn’t mean we can’t have “reasonable” gun regulations.

The speeches called for background checks on private transfers of guns and banning of “assault weapons” such as the AR-15. There was no debate, no alternative perspective offered. Something had to be done to save lives, students were told. But nothing was said about removing gun-free zone signs or letting armed staff and teachers defend the students.

Despite the principal’s promises, no administrator or teacher tried to interrupt.....

I bet half the students that participated didn’t know what they were protesting.

They were enticed with 17 minutes out of school.

Public schools prevent students from doing their own thinking?

News flash for ya Mr. John Lott, Jr., that’s the idea. Public schools have been doing that for years, if not decades.

The principal, who assured parents and students that the event wouldn’t be political, should be canned forwith.

“Shocked, I am shocked I tell you! Round up the usual suspects!”

NEA & Teachers are uniformly LEFTist. Expecting non-LEFT behavior is illogical!

This is little more than a Democrat stunt. It seems all prepared and rehearsed. I would not be too surprised to hear that some asshole like SoreAss paid the shooter.

i am on a large campus now

most of the students have been indoctrinated to protest, they’ve been fed very slanted and largely-inaccurate info WHILE NOT EVEN being told absolutely vital facts necessary for them to form considered, intelligent points of view

they don’t know anything about the history of gun controls, who sponsored them, why, and what then happened to those countries

they know nothing about the American Revolution, the US Constitution and why our Founders gave us the Second Amendment in the first place

they know nothing about the number of firearms already in circulation

they have no idea whatsoever about the obvious response of most gun owners if and when anyone tries to steal or confiscate their property (this, even though they claim they would of course defend their rights to keep their own goodies). When asked if they believe in getting rid of guns so much... whether they’d like to actually try to confiscate even one American’s firearm....just try to steal just one gun from its owner........ they immediately cringe and start making excuses ....so they do have some instinctive sense of self-preservation...

they know nothing about anything they will need to reach intelligent perspectives

they are just being manipulated

Gun walkouts in socialist indoctrination centers.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

Any who doubt it should attend the open mike readings in NYC when the Outward Bound crowd visits once a year. The aging hippy gasses are almost toxic.

Very few of my son's 9th grade class walked out. He reports most of the walkers were the weird kids anyway.
