March is a notoriously fickle month for weather, but one thing that always comes, rain or shine, is the first day of spring — even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Despite three back-to-back-to-back Nor’easters just weeks ago, the first day of spring — which falls on Tuesday, March 20 this year — is officially here. The first day of spring is called the vernal equinox (sometimes also referred to as the spring equinox or March equinox) and it is almost always either March 20 or March 21 (though it will fall on March 20 for the next two years in a row, according to the National Weather Service.)

The warm weather ushers in the opportunity to spend more time outdoors, especially with longer hours of sunlight.

Here’s everything you need to know about the first day of spring:

The Vernal Equinox means the equal hours of daylight and darkness. In Italian Spring is known as ‘’Prima Vera’’ or “First Green’’. In German it’s “Herbst’’.

The Eddy Minimum. This is just the beginning. Noreaster #4 and #5 predicted for next weekend. The next couple years will be “interesting times” to be living.

“I’ll cut my hair on the first day it turns 72 degrees, Might take a shower too”

Scuzzy McNasty sez; dunna overdo it, shearing can still bring on a lengthy brain-freeze moment. As for taking a shower, think of it as washing away a natural immunity shield that sans bathing is increasingly enhanced.

Herbst is autumn.

Frühlings-Tagundnachtgleiche is Vernal equinox. Or just simply Frühlingstagundnachtgleiche.

Frühling is spring. Probably from “Früh”, “early”, since the year used to start on the Vernal Equinox. In England, prior to 1752, the year started on March 25. March 24, 1731 was followed the next day by March 25, 1732.

This article is full of misinformation and half truths. It’s not just their politics that is hopeless.

I have to go to work, I haven’t got the time to critique it. If you do read it you will know less afterwards than before.

If you are interested in the cardinal points of the sun, or the Vernal (March) Equinox in general, read the wikipedia article.

Maybe not even a fourth of the US is shaded as “wet” but headline says “US” to expect wet spring. I am sadly disappointed after reading article and seeing MORE dry weather.

Actually Herbst means autumn. Frühling is Spring in German (Früh = Early). The vernal equinox in German is referred to as Äquinoktium or Tagundnachtgleiche (Day and Night Same).
