Farmers Hit Hard As Trump Backs Big Oil

The Trump administration seems to be leaning towards allying with the oil refining industry in its fight against Big Corn and federal rules requiring the use of corn ethanol.

Reuters reports that the U.S. EPA apparently granted an exemption to Andeavor, a large oil refiner, from having to comply with blending requirements as part of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) last month. The RFS requires refiners to blend biofuels, such as corn ethanol, into their refined fuels. If they can’t or find it too costly, they are required to purchase credits.

The law dates back to 2007 under the George W. Bush administration, and is intended to cut crude oil demand and improve U.S. energy security. It has brought a windfall to corn country, although the environmental benefits have always been suspect.

The oil refining industry hates the law, because it forces them to pay for biofuels or pay for credits in lieu of blending ethanol into their fuel.

Hardly “Farmers”. More like “Big Ethanol”.

Oil Price has not struck me as a reliable source.

If using ethanol is economic, it will be blended into gasoline without any coercion by the government.

if it isn't economic, the only way it will be blended is by government coercion.

Maybe we’ll get some decent, corn-fed beef then, instead of that starving-*ssed, stringy, politically correct, western cr*p.

Good, ethanol is a net negative energy process. Only someone in government would think it’s a good idea to spend 1.2 gallons of diesel to make 1.0 gallons of ethanol. Not to mention hundreds of gallons of water.

Ethanol is the worst use of corn. Cane and sorghum are much better choices. It cuts a third of the labor out. We should abandon ethanol and go to bio diesel made out of hemp. But big oil probably will not go for that.

Small engine repair mechanics have made a fortune off ethanol mix. I run non ethanol super unleaded through my 2 cycle engine(s), only available in a few outlets.

If the idea is to grow plants for energy, it should be something that could be burned directly in a power plant.
The more it has to be processed to make a specific kind of fuel, or imitation thereof, the more energy will be wasted in the process.

GOOD! I know it will impact farmers, but it will benefit many more, including motorists and their vehicles. What did the farmers do before this became law?
