VANITY: Looking to dump Gmail for something more data-safe
My addled brain | 04/09/2018 | Myself

In light of the data issues that have been publicized as of late, I am seriously looking to dump Gmail, Fakebook, et. al., would like some suggestions for other email services that I would have less concern about my data being taken. I already use DuckDuckGo, so that part is good.

ProtonMail also has their ProtonBridge, which connects to the ProtonMail application & servers, and encrypts & decrypts your Email from those servers for an IMAP or POP Email client application, like Thunderbird or Oulook. It is Free for all levels of paid ProtonMail subscribers.

I do not use my cell phone device for the Internet, in any way. Calls yes, text messages yes, pictures yes (which I can download to my PC if I want to store them for a long time). As long as my cell phone works for making calls and texts, there no “app upgrades” needed. I also do no allow my financial institutions to send any alerts or transactions or notifications via text to my cell phone. For GPS I have an independent GPS device and “location” is not turned on on my cell phone. For Internet services when I am not at home, if needed I have my laptop (which I use when i travel but never use ANY “wifi hotspot” with it; only when I get to a secure destination.

Multiple reviewers said it no longer worked for them with Thunderbird after Enigmail version 2.0.

Thanks to all for the advice, it’s going to be a process to get this done - I’m still looking for how to delete all of my Google and Facebook info; I’ve seen a thread that had some of this info in it but not titled so not sure.

Very wise. :)

We use ours as a Bluetooth player and to control our thermostat. Both require apps.

No contacts or other info.

It stays on the table all if the time so GPS is boring.

No. According to Enigmail for Thunderbird version 2.0.1 is the latest release, and on the Tunderbird addons page for Enigmail multiple reviewers said with version 2.0 and later (2.0.1 I guess) it no longer worked with their Thunderbird. Maybe they are using a release of Thunderbird earlier than 52, they don’t say.

I can reach my thermostat. LOL

And when I can’t I don’t worry about it.

I have a question. You said that since you registered your own domain that no matter what service you use that with forwarding, your address will never change. Please explain how that works for you. Thanks.

I am using dotearth.com as my domain registrar. They have free email forwarding. So I advertise my email address as one of my many addresses using my domain. Then I set up forwarding of those addresses( me@mydomain.com) to the email address provided by my internet provider, currently me@sbcglobal.net. I can change that forwarding to me@yahoo.com, me@gmail.com, or whatever email service I use.

Over many years, I only had one problem. I stopped getting my email forwarded by ATT. I contacted them and they discovered that they had blocked all traffic from dotearth. By the next day and ever since then It has been smooth.

The only gotcha, is forwarding can take a minute or so.

One of these days I'll set up my own email server.

I’m using Mailfence, it’s secure and it offers the complete package: groups, calendar, documents.
