The Russkie Submachine gun of choice was the PPSH 43
Weird ass design the recoil buffer was a piece of oiled leather
The AK is a medium duty rifle
The thing about most of Ivans stuff was it was made so any potato farmer could operate it
POTATOE FARMER!
THAT’S Funny!
Wasn’t it designed by one?
In Russian terminology, the AK is an avtomat - a type of automatic rifle but of an intermediate caliber, combining the functions of the sub machine gun (pistol machine gun in Russian terminology) and an intermediate caliber carbine.
Its meant for relatively short-range engagements and relatively high rates of fire to overwhelm adversaries much the same as the German StG-44/MP44.
Its philosophy of design is directed towards the average conscript and parallels our armys hit probability model vs the aimed fire over maximum engagement ranges model that more highly talented and trained troops are able to employ.
I probably owe my life to the to whom it may concern nature of AK fire.

A few years ago a friend of mine who has an extensive high end gun collection decided to slum it and buy an AK variant. He called me because he couldn’t get the top cover back on. I told him to put the front in the groove in the reunion, line it up, then smack it like he was a drunken Russian peasant. I hear a metallic whack, laughter and then “It worked!”
