NATO ammunition captured in the field could be used in the AK-47; not the case for our stuff. Have you actually tried putting 7.62×51 NATO in a 7.62x39 chamber? I doubt it. Definitely 5.56 ammo is not going to work.
In real life, most combat takes place under 100 yards. For longer distances, each Russian squad has a marksman with a scoped Dragunov rifle.
