Marine Corps Commandant: In 15 Years, Our Aircraft Won't Need a Human in the Cockpit

The head of the United States Marine Corps says the Marines' air power could be completely uncrewed within 15 years.

General Robert B. Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, says the technology exists to realize this future. Neller stressed, however, that aircraft would not be completely autonomous, and would still be directed by a human being making key decisions.

The Marine Corps Times quoted Neller from an event at the Brookings Institution saying: “I don’t know what war is going to look like in the future, [but] I think things that fly in the sky, the great majority of them … there will not be human beings at the control. There will be a human somewhere directing that thing.”

The Times further quoted Neller saying, “We can fly everything we get now without a human being in the cockpit,” Neller said. “Any vehicle we have, any airplane we have … to fly that thing I am not sure we need a human being.”(continued)

It doesn't end well.

Probably not, but you better have a fool proof way of keeping the controls out of enemy hands.

Because the last thing you want is to launch a fleet of armed drones into the sky, only to have them turn around and open fire.

And you don’t want them crashing into a mountain either because someone jammed the GPS.

That is spot on. If we can control the bots, someone else can as well. A pilotless bot is not subject to g-forces, but can be stolen

The moron has no business hanging around the Brookings Institute. That’s a left wing outfit.

The defense industry would love to field a fleet of unmanned (extremely expensive) aircraft.
In reality the Marines only need things like some Harriers, Warthogs, and some fighters. Mostly the USMC needs machines that the overall USAF theater commander will have no use for. Otherwise they get stolen away.

And no robot or remote controlled plane will give a grunt the feeling that another Marine is overhead understanding the situation. I don’t care how good your sensors are, you won’t have the situational awareness that a human will have.

Wonder how much Lockheed paid this Obama general?

Late fifties experts were saying gun equipped planes were no longer needed.

And everybody knows drones are foolproof. There's no way one could be captured then duplicated by the enemy.

Oh. wait...

It is called war for a reason.
Yep.

Recall how recklessly our politicians have deployed troops post-conscription. Then imagine what would happen if they could wage war without worrying about visuals of body bags.

Captain Kirk warned us about that, over 50 years ago.
