I just watched the video, so now no one else has to.
This video is groundbreaking in the coverage it's getting. After appearing on Saturday Night Live doing a bit as the actor and real person Donald Glover (Not related) and a musical spot as his "counter ego" (Yeah, right) "Childish Gambino" this guy put his new video on Youtube and the hits have been coming fast and hard.
This is the guy who is playing Lando Calrissian in the new Solo movie, and he's Troy on Community. He was in some other stuff too, so I'm sure you've seen him around.
But this new song is designed to be seen only in it's Video form. The song is decent, but a bit repetitive. It's not really written on purpose, but it's really just a soundtrack for a visual presentation. So it's not really a song either. It's a soundtrack.
The video is what it's all about. Because of course Donald has "something to say" but that something is only from his point of view. Most videos and music are. They are written from the point of view of the musician. We all remember Sting singing about being an illegal alien and his ridiculous political viewpoints synced to beautiful music. It's a song I enjoy thoroughly.
In this video he looks pretty happy but he rather graphically shoots some dude in the head who's been tied to a chair with a bag over his head while singing "this is america". Quick fact check: Executions like this are commonplace around the globe with America being in the last position of "Places where people get tied to chairs and their heads blown off by cowards who put bags over their heads and do it from the back". Well, maybe if Chicago was surgically removed from the map (Email me for details! Lets make this happen!) America wouldn't even be in the thought process for this type of violence.
Oh ! And this video has some great cars in it too ! It was a trip down memory lane ! A 1978 Corolla sportwagon, one of my dream cars ! And a 1987 Honda Accord, a 1983 Accord and a 1986 Tercel all-trac wagon ! A gorgeous 1980 Corolla wagon and some other blasts from the past. It's like they went into my garage and started filming. Oh and he guns down a black choir too which happened in America once. It happens in other countries far, far more but I guess he didn't have to change the name of the song to make it more accurate. Form over function, the artists frequently say.
He looks pretty happy about killing people but he still dances on top of cars (Well what I recall was a 1992 Corolla.. not a favorite of mine but the guy who cleans my building drives one) and sorta bitches about a poor, common black man who lives in hell and the white devil tries to keep him from what's been going on so far.. which is happy dancing and murdering dozens of people.
Oh by the way, he's not poor. Nor a commoner. He's a military brat with a really, really good job. He's goddam Lando Calrissian. Things aren't going that bad.
At the end of the video he's running, somewhat scared and somewhat elated. I don't know what from or towards but I and the people creating the video didn't seem to give a sh!t either.
And then it's over. I just saved about 3 minutes of your time.
But awesome cars !

Well Jim Jones did it to Americans (on foreign soil) in a church setting.
And he was protected by the likes of Harvey Milk, Governor Moonbeam, and the Carters (all Democrats).

Yeah, but we see these cars whenever someone does some kind of “period 80’s piece” (Even though the 80s Nova was a Toyota Corolla, the Fury wasn’t around in the 80s)
I had a Caprice sedan. That thing had power. The other cars were toys. The car that was a real car for me was my 87 Olds Cutlass Supreme. I miss that thing. I used to think they would be around forever and I would be able to buy one at any point for $100. I was very, very wrong.
I meant to say Gran Fury (M Platform). I had the Dodge Diplomat AND the last Chrysler V8 sedan for over a decade, the 1989 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. The worst car I ever owned was a 1987 Honda Civic Hatchback. I despised that car, and it acted like it knew it.
Take a look from another angle. Watch the chaos in the background while he is singing and dancing. It was his metaphor for all the violence happening with no one paying attention to it, all the while that hollyweird is all that everyone it paying attention too. That is what I saw, so just saying.
I was planning on not seeing the movie anyway.
I have not been planning on seeing any movie for a few years now. Call me old. I guess the last one was "Force Awakens" ... for the grand kids.
My movies are all in my mind ... "Suddenly someone'll say, like, "plate," or "shrimp," or "plate of shrimp" out of the blue, no explanation."
... although I do have the DVD !
Honestly though, I'll never forget seeing that opening "Google Maps" sequence ( before Google Maps, or Google even ) in the theater.
I watched it and literally was sick to think that anyone could think it was anything other than violent,ugly,dark, truly stupid and shallow.
And not music. Noise.

I had never hears of him until the SNL gig.
He’s a decent comic actor, but that’s it.
Doubt I’ll ever see him again.
Kind of a late response, but I kept hearing about this video, and everyone was so busy analyzing everything. I like your perspective. I didn’t think much of it.
