Melania Trump tourism: First lady's hometown Sevnica lures visitors

It may have brightly painted walls and leafy gardens, but Savo Kladnik Elementary School is unlikely to be on anyone's must-visit travel list.

Or at least that was the case until November 2016, when a certain former pupil -- Melania Trump -- was revealed as the next first lady of the United States.

Now Savo Kladnik, named after a political activist slain in World War II, is one of the key stops on a tour of the Slovenian town of Sevnica where the third Mrs. Trump spent her formative years.

While the rest of Slovenia has been somewhat slow to capitalize on arguably its most famous former citizen, Sevnica and the surrounding region of Posavje is taking full advantage to become a travel destination.

The US President's wife was born Melanija Knavs (pronounced Knauss,) in nearby Novo Mesto, but grew up in Sevnica, now an industrial town with a population of around 5,000.

Janez Levstik, a retired factory worker who now runs Melania Trump tours of the town, remembers the first lady as a child, describing the one-time model as a "nice girl" who was "good at school."(continued)

They should be so proud of her. We are.

She's beautiful on the inside and outside. So refreshing.

Slovenia looks beautiful and I’d like to see it sometime, although probably more so the NW part with the Julian Alps and Lake Bled than the Melania tour.

The article omits the most important piece of information: are all the women in Sevnica as attractive as Melania?
;-)

It is really beautiful. Bled is very nice but Kranjska Gora is wonderful. Ljubljana the capital also very nice.

The founders of Novo Mesto must not have been very imaginative when it comes to picking a name. It means "New Place."

The Ohio Republican politician George Voinovich (1936-2016) was half-Slovenian by descent.

I have been through parts of Slovenia by train or bus--all very scenic. Haven't been to Lake Bled but have visited the Postojna cave--I think it is the largest cave in Europe, or the second-largest. The last Bourbon king of France, Charles X (reigned 1830-1836), is buried in Slovenia.

Looks amazing, thanks! I did look at a very appealing Nat Geo hiking tour that went through that region of Slovenia - decided not to book it but am still tempted so I am going to track whether they keep offering it.

The third Mrs. Trump? Why is that even relevant to this article? CNN sucks.

Oops. I should have said Charles X reigned 1824-1830. He fled during the Revolution of 1830 and died in 1836.

There are dozens of towns called Newtown, Fairview, Riverside and Springfield in most of the states all over the U.S.
