Anecdotally, you can tell how much the economy is booming by the number of trains. I drive often on highways bordered by BNSF tracks and I cannot believe the number of trains I am seeing going to and from Canada and to and from Seattle to the west. Lots and lots of trains = good economy in my book!

Same thing with logging trucks - they were much more infrequent last year.

Winning!

They are pulling old rail cars out of shelters and rebuilding them. They even request rail cars from DOD that are at key bases such as Hood, Stewart, etc. Lots of DoD cars sitting still until wartime.

Awesome! N&S has a main line just about a mile from my house. Lots of trains always, but even more now. It’s double track and they are using the second track to park trains recently, which means that the nearby yard is full.

And it could get even bigger.

Why? Because railroads are preparing to take on the trucking industry in a BIG way. They're talking about new terminals that can load and unload double-stack container trains very quickly and possibly revive the use of Wabash National RoadRailer trains with an updated design.

Railroad has their own retirements system - not on Social Security. Lot of RR guys I know are retiring this year and next. RR jobs open all over the midwest - not sure where they will find people to fill them.

“Free job/career this is awesome! If I was younger....”

That makes two of us.
The RR’s used to really take care of their people. Probably even better today.
RR retirement was considered the gold standard. No Social Security!

My boy is a RR engineer. His comment on this:
“Yeah, UP is in near shut down mode due to a lack of crews. Of course firing 90% of the people that they hire for the most minor of infractions doesn’t help either. Our outfit is in the same boat too..... we don’t have nearly enough crews to do the work. I’ve been working 60 hour weeks, and it won’t be letting up anytime soon.

We start running coal again on Jan 1st, and will have transloaded Utah waxy crude oil trains again any day now. Where we’re going to get the crews or locomotives, I have no idea!”
