The Permian basin is on fire, and the current boom cycle in its oil industry is posing an interesting challenge that area in Texas: Right now, that challenge is a shortage of oil industry workers.
The oil industry, in an attempt to keep up with increased oil production—particularly in the Permian Basin, is one-upping other employers in a mad dash to reclaim enough workers to keep the industry awash with oil.
In fact, as the Dallas News pointed out on Wednesday, the industry is throwing double pay to woo workers away from other industries, such as school bus drivers, police officers, and restaurant personnel—and everything in between. So much so, that other businesses are finding it hard to maintain a proper workforce.
That is good for the Permian Basin workers who are now getting double pay. Not so good for the kids who are getting to school late because there aren’t enough bus drivers to get them to school.
But things haven’t always been this cheery for Texas, who is used to the ebb and flow that is indicative of oil country. Oil production in the United States has grown from 8.9 million barrels per day in January 2017 to a record 10.8 million bpd now, and it’s showing no signs of stopping just yet.
Oil production in the Permian Basin, specifically, has grown from around 2.0 million bpd in January 2017 to over 3.0 million bpd now. And while takeaway capacity has been cited as a possible kink in its aggressive plans to pump more, worker shortages may prove to be a significant hurdle....

Just to add a little info, let Freepers know that in addition to great pay, all a Freeper needs to do is show up and they will be given lodging accommodations and free meals in addition to great entry training. This is what I would be doing if I was a young person.
Not only are free meals given, the meals are usually luxury level such as prime steak, lobster, the whole gamut of cuisine that usually lies outside an everyday budget. And these types of meals are served each day!
So if you’re young, and you want cost-free living and great pay to save beaucoup bucks, this is your opportunity!

Its great news for the country and I forwarded a job opening for Norfolk Southern to my step-son just 30 minutes ago..He’s looking for a career now.
My step son is an equipment operator, for a while construction was slow but now he is getting well again. He has no desire to go work in the oil patch, did that in his younger days when he was single. Thanks to all the work in the oil patch he was able to land a great job in a place he and his wife have wanted to live for a while.
It is getting hard to fill jobs that require a CDL or any job related to oil field work for the lower paying jobs like school bus drivers. I am sure this will work itself out, some people have come out of retirement to fill such jobs in my area until new employees can be found.
I cannot fault the workers, my step son left what was a steady but low paying job for the kind of work he does- but who would not want to gain better employment? This will also be an incentive for on the job training for younger people- which has been almost non-existent when workers were plentiful.
Ok, I’m getting fair questions about where these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities are located at specifically.
These opportunities are not only in the Permian but also in the Bakken.
Just use search terms such as “man camps permian basin” if you’re interested in Texas or use “man camps bakken oil” if you want to be up north.

Also, although the term ‘man-camp’ is used, these opportunities are also suitable for young women who can handle being a wildcatter. Women are just as capable of setting up and operating a rig or any of the supportive field work that a man can do.
And when I say ‘young’, I mean one that still has strength in their body, could be a young 50ish person.
But definitely, if you’re a person that seeks training that will stay with you a lifetime, this is where it’s at.

Wow - increase the price paid for labor and you increase the supply. Who'da thunk it?

I said "foreign" not just "illegal". And whatever the special restrictions may be on the energy industry, this example shows that a business can get the workers it needs by raising wages - so no business "needs" foreign workers, legal or illegal. As our President has said, hire American!

Boom and bust. Bakken the same. My son worked for an oilfield contractor in Minot ND, then went into business for himself as a fleet mechanic. Sometimes they had $60,000 months. Then the price dropped out of oil, and it took only 30 days when the boom busted before he was done: all contracts cancelled without notice, leaving him bankrupt and penniless, owing thousands on parts orders for trucks that would never be repaired.
This is having a drastic effect on trucking in the Midwest too. Lost two drivers to the frackers in Ohio who pay double for “water bottle” haulers to haul water to existing wells. Higher pay and you’re home every night.
$70 oil and they turn the drilled wells back on, and they need lots of water to fracture the seams.
Huge meals, but you'll be expected to work hard and long hours, outdoors no matter the weather. You'll burn every bit of it off. It's a wild ride.
We had oil people setting up trailers and campers in peoples yards...the wives would prepare meals as well. Everybody was making money! There simply wasn’t enough hotels etc. in my hometown.....the oil guys loved it...especially the home made meals.
By the time the work was finally completed many of the oil people remained and made my home town their home.
Double pay, that’s great. Who says free markets don’t work?
