Connecticut manufacturers, looking to fill thousands of jobs, are reaching beyond community colleges and vocational schools to persuade high school students to embrace careers in 21st-century factories.

It’s not an easy task as educators and manufacturers battle stereotypes of old, dirty factories.

“The struggle has been getting the kids to see it,” said Mark Ruede, assistant principal at Manchester High School. “We definitely have some perception work to do in town.”

Manchester High School students have visited Pratt & Whitney in Middletown where the United Technologies Corp. subsidiary manufactures jet engines, he said. What began as a trip to teach engineering became a lesson in manufacturing, Ruede said....

” battle stereotypes of old, dirty factories “

In the case of Pratt in East Hartford, it’s not a stereotype.

The place is a pit.

Mike Rowe was right about reintroducing automotive, woodshop, welding, et cetera, to high school.

In my life this is the best job market I have ever seen. None others even come close to this. I wish it was like this in the 80’s when I graduated high school. Or in the late 80’s when I got out of the service.

I don't remember any manufacturing in Middletown. East Hartford was the main location, with some action in Rocky Hill, and Southington shut down. I think North Haven may have shut down as well. Cheshire had some action, but not manufacturing.

If you saw the movie "Forever Young", where Mel Gibson is air guy used in an experiment where his chamber is locked in for a few decades, that could have been in the East Hartford "M" Building. The site is a shell of its former self and if Mel Gibson were on ice, no one would know for an awfully long time.

John Ratzenberger, who played the mailman on the Cheers tv show, has been an outspoken advocate for American manufacturing too. He has even run his own businesses.

Amazingly, John is the ONLY voice actor to be featured in every Pixar movie..supposedly. And yes, he’s a pro-capitalist conservative.

Time to cleanse the unemployment rolls, the welfare rolls, and the deadbeat programs. Time to tighten down the screws on the requirements to receive public aid - if you are able-bodied - no more made-up excuses for sitting on a couch and drawing a “check”.

Man, if I could go back to work I’d jump on it. We’re looking at selling a hemp oil product from home to get some more money coming in. Today we paid our last bill and we’re essentially broke.

Throw in a 401k and you could be a millionaire in 15 years. Those that opened Home Depot did just that.

Rowe focused on the problem of subsidizing universities first though. I would like to see Federal financial aid restricted to vocational, apprenticeship, community or technical colleges.

My dad would tell me how you could quit one factory on a Tues and walk down the road and have a job on Thursday back in the early 70s.
