How will you fund it?

Hosting is not cheap and neither is bandwidth at the levels which would be required.

I’d love to see it happen but it’s a huge undertaking. DARPA and CIA created most of the social media that’s polluting the minds of Americans today. We don’t have their budget.

Great idea!

Then we’ll need a bunch of non-contributing freeloaders to post clickbait to it several times a day!

Oh, wait...

Patreon and Periscope used by Scott Adams and others.

The Intellectual Dark Web and their followers might use an interesting capability. Most IDW people currently on YouTube, btw

“What is to prevent a few people getting together and come up with a bigger and better platform for the masses? “

CIA backing?

I'm thinking a nice town square with a small movie theater, a hamburger joint, a few churches and a nice library. And no smartphones.

That would be a nice social media platform.

so, you’re asking for help on FR to create something that would be direct competition for traffic for FR.

is that what’s happening?

No. It would not be in direct competition. Two different platforms for two different purposes. Is twitter in direct competition? No, not really.

There are number of options for that, crowdsourcing, personal funds. No one says we go big like Twitter right away. We build up.

No need for sarcasm. There are ways to get around that too. I think there are ways to limit the spam. It just takes the will to do it right. For instance, for a small fee ($2-3) each month, the user will not be subjected at all to ads. That is, of course, after the platform has proven itself.

Well said. There is nothing social about small screen zombies.

You could put 1/1000th of the effort into finding a viable alternative to whatever it is that you dislike than it would take to actually reinvent the wheel that has been reinvented and copied hundreds if not thousands of times already, you’d probably find it.

Yes, that is one way to go about it. But it’s a pretty sure bet that the world isn’t going back to that model any time soon, so why not make the best use of the tech available?

There’s only like 150 of them out there, what’s one more.

Right, and that is an option too. I think that was in the original post, though I might have only thought it. That's why having a small team is much better than going it alone. Bounce ideas off of, etc.

What I hate about these social media platforms is they annoy you day and night.

If you define exactly how the promotion and use of the platform will be different from what exists today, that is a good first step. If you can get FReepers to agree to your plan, you’re on your way.

But that may be a problem.

True, like I said in the OP. However, marketing and spreading the word is the difference. The one more is what WE control. I can’t control the 150 or 1500 out there. It’s the difference between owning a business and working for the business.
