JEFFERSON, Ga. - Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) formally announced plans for a new fulfillment center in Jefferson, Georgia. The 850,000 sq.ft. facility will help Amazon move more deeply into furniture and other large items.

When opened, Amazon will create 1,000 new full-time jobs at the facility. The company currently has more than 1,500 full-time employees at its existing facilities in the state. A warehouse currently operating in Jefferson describes positions as paying up to $11.50 per hour, and handling items up to 49 lbs.

“Georgia has been a great place to do business for Amazon and we look forward to adding a new fulfillment center to better serve our customers in the region,” said Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s Vice President of North American operations....

More Nancy Pelosi crumbs.

I’m just waiting for the Democrats to claim all these new jobs pay minimum wage, and you can’t support a family or buy a house with what these jobs pay.

In between Dahlonega and Athens.

My observation: Amazon could blow out Ikea if it had a
US manufacturing base.

With this facility it can hit FL, GA and NC. Three of four locations for millenials.

850k sq/ft is 922’ x 922’. 3 football fields long on each side.
Seems kinda small to me...

Three hours to Charlotte, an hour and a half to Atlanta. Quick access from Athens for students looking for part time work.

You probably meant ‘between Gainesville and Athens’. Not much on up in the mountains at Dahlonega except played out gold mines and a University. About 6,000 folks not counting the close to 20,000 students.

If I remember correctly, Jefferson is near Gainesville, Ga. and I-85. I-85 moves from Atlanta to S. Carolina.

I was thinking JAX FL. Air, ship, truck or rail is cheap from there into the 3d most populous state.

With a top pay of $11.50 per hour, and Amazon's reputation as a miserable employer to work for, indeed the complaint will be they can't hire enough people.

Put the warehouse in a rural area of the south that’s been beaten down by asinine trade policy and manufacturing plant closures, and you’ll have more applications than you know what to do with, for $11.50 an hour full time with benefits. There are such areas where someone could actually live on that, it would be tight but it’s doable.

As if I-85 near Jefferson needed any more congestion.
Georgia is growing way to fast to handle the influx of people moving here and it’s going to turn the state Blue eventually.

For Jefferson, Ga. you could get high school grads from Gainesville and Athens and Jefferson.

It’s exit 137 off of I-85.
Used to be woods & farmland about 15 years ago.
Growing like crazy over the past 10 years.

I live in just such an area. Even here, that’s not even Walmart wages.

I can remember when Amazon only sold books and FReepers lined up to say they would never amount to anything.

Walmart provides little to nothing in the way of benefits, they’re on Medicaid for one. Big difference there.
