Preparations are in full swing for Nucor Steel Sedalia LLC as the company works to establish its steel rebar micro-mill.
Nucor’s local staff are operating temporarily from the J.A. Lamy Manufacturing Co. building as they oversee the lengthy process of building the third steel micro-mill in the United States.
Vice President and General Manager Kevin Van De Ven said Nucor is aiming to have the facility operational by the fourth quarter of 2019. Construction contractors are in the middle of compacting and leveling dirt before building can begin. The next step will involve receiving the necessary permits to start construction.
The company is expecting to start hiring the first of its steel mill employees in August. Nucor announced its arrival in Sedalia in November with the promise of 250 new jobs with an average salary of $65,000.
“We’re going to need people with strong mechanical and electrical aptitude,” Van De Ven said. “The plan is we’re going to go out probably in July or August and hold some town hall meetings so that we can let the local community know what the hiring process looks like.”
Nucor will organize its employees into crews, which contribute to the melt shop, the roll mill and shipping. New hires will travel to receive training at other Nucor divisions.
Pretty good for a town that is nothing but fast food joints and a large fair grounds.
But do the jobs pay crumbs as Nancy P. might say?
250 new jobs with an average salary of $65,000. I’m guessing that’s a decent wage in Sedalia, Missouri.
At this rate, they may change the name of the newspaper.

$65K per annum is beyond a decent wage in Sedalia!
Good company. I foresee a lot of new trucks and bassboats in Sedalia.
Nucor has the highest paid steelworkers in the United States - and they are not a union shop.
Interesting to read since the local steel mill was just torn down after about 80 years in business making re-bar and other unalloyed products. The years in service and being a union shop were the primary reason it was shut down. Add in an EPA requirement to spend $80-mil to upgrade emissions controls and they decided to fold their tent. The plant stood for several more years until somebody decided they could re-develop the area to make a buck.
What makes a difference with Nucor is that the workers are cross trained on various crafts. If something breaks or malfunctions, many times it can be fixed, and without a lot of the bureaucratic paperwork involved like other mills, where the work order needs to go through so many layers of supervision. Add to that a good percentage of compensation is in the form of the tonnage bonus.
I have worked with Nucor in the past when I was employed by SMS Concast.
But.. but.. steel tariffs are going to dampen demand. How can this be?

I know a top notch welder that went to work for them 15 years ago. He is doing quite well.
They are publicly traded and kept their heads above the water during the obam years. 2017 revenue was 20+ billion w/ over 20k employees:

Missouri Assembly passed Right to Work legislation last year, but unions have forced it on the ballot. It will be voted on in the Primary election at the end of August. Several companies are in a holding pattern until it absolutely passes.
