"Happy Independence Day" vs "Happy Fourth of July"

Posted on 07/04/2018 2:23:47 AM PDT by bryan999

Has anyone noticed that the media tends to push calling today the "Fourth of July" or "July Fourth" versus simply calling it was it is: "Independence Day"?

This seems to pass down into our speaking lexicon, and people end up wishing you a "Happy Fourth". My take on it is there's a nefarious, underlying reason and leftists who control the media and the schools do this on purpose. It's akin to the whole "Happy Holidays" nonsense.

I think the left and the media wants us to forget that this is a day when we remember and celebrate our country's "independence". I don't think this is anything new, necessarily, but I noticed on Facebook earlier after an insipid "Happy 4th of July!" thing popped up into my feed. Google does this, too. In fact, I would take note today of how many media outlets (tv, radio, internet) wish their audiences a "Happy Independence Day". It'll probably be very close to zero.

But does this type of re-programming start on places like Facebook... ? Or does it start in the schools? I'm quite my boomer parents were not saying "Happy Fourth!" to each other when they were kids.

I too have been thinking about this for many years. I now exclusively use Independence Day rather than “Forth of July”, as “Forth of July” is as meaningless as “1st of the month”.

Let's see what John Adams wrote to Abigail Adams on July 4, 1776:
But the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.

I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

There you have it: it is the "Day of Deliverance."

My take on the matter: don't look for nefarious, dark coded meanings in everything.

Exactly. The use to of the phrase “Fourth of July” for Independence Day goes back over 200 years...

“We have this day restored the Sovereign to Whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come.”

(Samuel Adams, during his signing of the Declaration)

One of the TV programs, was doing a ‘Man On The Street’ asking people about the meaning of July 4. Of the 10 or so interviewed, no one knew. Just amazing.

The left wants to extinguish American history, as the fundamental rights of free speech, religion and the right to bear arms are anchored in the fight for independence. These are the same cretins who push “Happy Holidays” in lieu of Merry Christmas.

I like to use the phrase “Independence Day.” It reminds me of my grandmother. I grew up hearing that and “Armistice Day.” Oh, and we got weather prognostications rather than forecasts. Takes me back.

Well at least Adams described it appropriately. It’s just that sometime between then and now we started calling it “Independence Day”.

Nowadays it’s more often than not referred to as “the Fourth of July”... all meaning washed away. I think this has been slowly done deliberately, and (some) people just give in to it without thinking.

Not so much as my local news media, they use both “Independence Day” and “Forth of July” terms.

But.

Most of the local tv commercials, esp. car salesman/woman commercial, furniture, etc., only use Forth of July.

So blame them first.

This article explains that “the Fourth of July” is was in use (scarcely) towards the end of the 18th century, HOWEVER I still think liberals make a concerted effort to suck the meaning out of it:

What I’m saying is this: Facebook has a choice. They can use “Independence Day” in their stupid posts, but they don’t. And I think it’s deliberate.

Facebook, and much of the media, want us to be part of a ridiculous “global community”. We’re therefore not as “independent” as some would like to believe.

Just my take on it.. and yeah, I think its nefarious.

You are correct. I conflated “forty” and “fourth”.

The Globalists have long wanted the US to give up her sovereignty and bow to the authority of the world court, the UN etc. so they won’t be wishing us Independence Day anytime soon.

I called it "FReedom Day" with my contribution - maybe the extra concentration of Independence and FReedom will help this fundraising term go more smoothly - many gave their lives for our FReedom yet too many are loath to donate a few bucks on a regular basis - makes one wonder what they really stand for...

Keep FR healthy and alive ... MAGA!!!!
