Car tariffs (vanity)
me

Posted on 07/06/2018 8:23:06 AM PDT by Leaning Right

I looked it up. The EU puts a 10% tariff on American cars. The United States puts a 2.5% tariff on EU cars. In what universe is that fair?

Trump should address the nation, and hold up a poster with that data on it. People would come over to his side hugely. Why doesn't he do that?

(And no, tweets don't count. The average American voter doesn't read political tweets.)

Here's where I got that tariff data:

It’s certainly not fair, but in the interest of fairness you should know that the USA puts 25% tariff on European light trucks. All of this is bad.

Globalist and Free Traitors™ don’t want you educate yourself on tariffs and trade. How dare you! Our elites know better! You supposed to just consume, like an insect, never thinking past tomorrow.

You are both right about the US light truck tariff. It’s worth mentioning. And there are certainly other lopsided tariffs out there.

But the current dust-up is about cars. And when it comes to that single issue, Trump has all the data on his side. He needs to make the most of it.

The USA offers 6 or so light trucks, the us consumer still has many domestic choices. Plus as for EU light trucks, well they suck.

They started the one sided trade war, and we are going to finish it!

Of course it’s all bad.
It’s been bad for decades.
Level the playing field.

They get around the tariff by sending over partially assembled trucks/vans or CKDs which are assembled here.

Look up the U.S. tariff on imported trucks. It's 25%.

It's so high that in the 1980s the Japanese would ship their mini pickup trucks with the beds not fully attached, so that 'final assembly' was in the U.S. and they paid the lower passenger car tax.

Today, those mini panel trucks such as the Ford Transit Connect that you see trades using, are brought into the country with rear seats so they pay the passenger car import tariff, then the seats are removed here and shredded for recycling.

Chicken Tax

Games like these are played all the time.

“...USA puts 25% tariff on European light trucks. All of this is bad.”

The USA places tariffs.

The EU places taxes.

Tariffs are like armed warfare. Other things should be tried first, but they are a viable option when other options can’t be used effectively.

Just because tariffs may be bad and have bad side effects, that doesn’t mean we should never use them, most especially when we are in trade situations where the other side is grinning and thumbing their noses at us in contempt.

If you watch the 1987 Larry King interview with a young Trump, he was visibly angry at the open contempt and derision our “trading partners” treated us with, because they knew that in many cases, our form of government tied one hand behind the backs of our businesses that traded overseas.

When you see that video, his actions and attitudes on trade and tariffs make complete sense. Being a businessmen, he doesn’t accept that you have to be a partner to a bad, one-sided treaty. He is all for using any method possible to renegotiate or get out of it, which is what any normal and profitable business would do, rather than go bankrupt.

Right. But’s that would actually be a distraction politically (one issue at a time). As I noted in post #5, the current dust-up between the US and the EU is over cars. Trump can win over a lot of folks by going on TV, and pointing out the huge tariff difference on cars.

And if Merkel is upset about US tariffs on imported EU trucks, she can go on German TV and talk about it.

Tariffs are like armed warfare.

What f-ing hyperbole..

That is ridiculous. The USA could completely fund itself with tariffs which are historically a legitimate form of taxation. A superior one if you ask me. ..

Some people are complete idiots on the issue of tariffs.

You have some people who say never to use them, and some who advocate using them all the time. Both extremes are idiots.

They are a tool to be used with care.

Lots of tariffs on things coming into the us.
Why not make it here?
If you sell it here, make it here.

Competitive advantage is your product doesn’t get taxed.
US workers get jobs.
Lots of local taxes.
A virtuous cycle, in the MAGA way!

Well, she's talking about car tariffs now.

Here are a few "idiots" that advocated using them(tariffs) all the time.

A low flat tariff combined with a low flat income tax over, say $20,000, that would work for me. The tariff would help domestic industries. And the income tax would make people see - in an obvious way - that they have skin in the game.

But this couldn’t that happen without a Constitutional amendment. Because proposals like mine give politicians no way to sell tax code favors.

A tariff does not require a Constitutional amendment! Where did you get that idea?

The simple solution is for President Trump to say “Going forward, America will impose tariffs equal to those imposed on us from other nations. We will reciprocate. If our trading partners don’t like the tariffs we impose, they’re welcome to lower their tariffs on us and we will reduce ours in-kind.”
