In building its Southeast Metro Automated Routing Terminal Hub in Atlanta, the Georgia-based logistics giant knew it would need thousands of workers, and the hiring for these roles has begun in earnest.
While the vast majority of these roles will be part-time, that still leaves around 700 full-time positions, too.
What skills do you need to perform these tasks? For UPS, its all about work ethic. Chris Franzoni is the human resources director at the facility, and he told the AJC he and his team are looking for hard workers who show up on time.
UPS is incentivizing those looking for work with health benefits included for both part-time and full-time employees, and the company has also worked with local workforce development groups to find those fitting the job profile.
These part-time roles could lead to something more should you prove yourself, but theyre also flexible enough to allow for continuing education opportunities or to act as a second job for those who need one. And the money isnt bad, either.
Per the AJC article:
The part-time package handlers will work one of four 3.5 to 5 hour shifts a sunrise, day, twilight or overnight shift. Part-time hourly workers start at $10.35 an hour, which could go up to $13 an hour if a new Teamsters labor deal is approved. Part-time supervisors will start at $15 to $21 an hour.
This facility will have a dedicated MARTA bus stop, which should help alleviate some issues for employees facing transportation obstacles.

Also, there is a job fair July 14th at the Andrew & Walter Young Family YMCA. Recruitment slots have been filled, however walk-ins can come between 2:00-3:00pm. If youre interested in checking out what UPS has to offer for this facility you should definitely go to the job fair for the walk-in timeline.
Due to all the online shopping explosion.
I remember when Amazon first started selling online (CD’s only, if I remember correctly), my wife and I considered buying a lot of stock in UPS, FedEx, etc. But we didn’t...
While a work/study at the unemployment office in the early 1980’s, a stock broker in our building kept trying to sell me Microsoft stock.
Heh.
;)
Isn't everyone? I've told young people that no matter where you start, if you show up on time, are well groomed and polite, don't miss days and call in sick, avoid drugs and alcohol, you will rise like a sky rocket. It doesn't matter if you have skills. When people see you're the real deal, with a proven work ethic, they will train you and promote you.
My words almost always fall on deaf ears.
At the end of the process, we wound up with "Must show up to the interview on time, and not curse at the interviewer". Seriously. Not much exaggeration there. Was a PITA to deal with at the time, but it makes for great stories, now.
The Obama Economy improved the hiring pool somewhat. People were a little more interested in coming onboard, I suppose desperation has that effect.
I've not had to hire anyone recently. Hope not to be looking in the shallow end again, if I do.
Yep. Easy way to get your name out in front again. Won't get you a job, but if it's down to you and one other, the goodwill is invaluable. Shows interest, attention to detail, and follow-through.
In the first 30 seconds of an interview, I can't tell you if I'm going to hire someone, but I can generally tell you if I'm *not* going to hire them.
So with that in mind, you should control the things that are easily controlled. Make sure that resumes, and any other written correspondence have correct spelling and grammar. Show up ontime. Dress appropriately - if you're unsure, it's OK to ask. Smile, and give a polite greeting. Have a firm handshake. Practice these things - in the shower, in the car, with a friend, whatever - until they're second nature.
None of these will get you a job, but if they're not done, will mean that you probably don't get it. It's an easy way to separate yourself from the rest of the herd.
If only.....
