I taught veterans and welfare and food stamp recipients how to look for work at the unemployment office for 20 years. My biggest piece of advice: Have a thank-you note with you, find out who you interviewed with and drop it in the mailbox on the way home. That’ll put your resume or application back on the top of the stack several days later. Those that said they used that technique invariably found work quickly.

Have a thank-you note with you

Yep. Easy way to get your name out in front again. Won't get you a job, but if it's down to you and one other, the goodwill is invaluable. Shows interest, attention to detail, and follow-through.

In the first 30 seconds of an interview, I can't tell you if I'm going to hire someone, but I can generally tell you if I'm *not* going to hire them.

So with that in mind, you should control the things that are easily controlled. Make sure that resumes, and any other written correspondence have correct spelling and grammar. Show up ontime. Dress appropriately - if you're unsure, it's OK to ask. Smile, and give a polite greeting. Have a firm handshake. Practice these things - in the shower, in the car, with a friend, whatever - until they're second nature.

None of these will get you a job, but if they're not done, will mean that you probably don't get it. It's an easy way to separate yourself from the rest of the herd.
