Tolerance--a word we hear a lot these days--is “the ability to live with people whose opinions and behavior you don’t agree with.” That’s essentially how Oxford defines it, how Merriam-Webster defines it and how we, as a society, have always defined it.
You may favor the death penalty while your cousin is against it. Your dad might have voted for Trump, your mom for Clinton and your brother may not have voted at all.
Whatever differences we have, tolerating the opinions of another is a prerequisite to a functioning and free society.
America itself was built on a foundation of tolerance. The Declaration of Independence guarantees us life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But there’s an implicit contract there: To have your life, your liberty and your pursuit of happiness, you must be tolerant of another individual’s life, liberty and their pursuit of happiness.
But this contract seems to be breaking down.
According to the mainstream media, only one side is living up to this ‘agreement:’ the left. The ‘right,’ “…is intolerant of everyone... except those darned white, heterosexual, Christian males.”
There’s only one problem. It’s just not true. Incredibly, the left isn’t even tolerant of the very people they say they’re tolerant of!
If you’re gay, black or an immigrant and not in lockstep with current leftist orthodoxy, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
If you believe we should judge people on the content of their character and not the color of their skin, the left calls you “racist.” If you believe that America is a nation of immigrants, but that our country should also protect its borders, the left calls you a “xenophobe.” If you believe that men and women are equal but fundamentally different...

Years ago I was at a neighborhood gathering. One of my Liberal neighbors was ranting and raving --
"We need to take away all the guns! We need to shut down corporations that pollute! We need to make nuclear power illegal! We need make coal illegal!"
I walked up and said that these policies would likely have a lot of unpleasant unintended consequences.
"You!" she spat, "You're a Republican! You're the problem! You just want to control everything!"
I said, "Sounds like you want to control everything. I'm a Conservative. I just want to be left alone."
She stormed off.
Not much tolerance there.

But it is supposed to be a two way street.To tolerate another’s opposing views is one thing but that’s not what democrats want. They demand that you submit to their views (ie turn in your guns, Obamacare etc) or else YOU are the one who is intolerant. F ‘em.

We should tolerate the people, but not their errors against the good. And there is a difference between good and evil, which is observable by those of sound mind.
