McConnell issues Supreme Court ultimatum

Mitch McConnell has a warning for Democrats demanding copious documents on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: Be careful what you wish for.

The Senate majority leader privately told senior Republicans on Wednesday that if Democrats keep pushing for access to upwards of a million pages in records from President Donald Trump’s high court pick, he’s prepared to let Kavanaugh’s confirmation vote slip until just before November’s midterm elections, according to multiple sources.

Delaying the vote past September would serve a dual purpose for McConnell, keeping vulnerable red-state Democrats off the campaign trail while potentially forcing anti-Kavanaugh liberals to swallow a demoralizing defeat just ahead of the midterms. Senators said McConnell believes the Democratic base will be “deflated” if they raise hopes of defeating Kavanaugh only to lose just days before the election.

Everyone here knows I despise McConnell. He is a pusillanimous snake.

But in situations like these, he is an experienced game-player and street-fighter. He knows this is ball-game, and is determined to win.

Yertle has done yeoman duty on judges. My previously subterranean opinion of him has risen accordingly. Because judges are very important.

We have similar opinions of McConnell. Agree with your assessment.

What he’s saying does make sense. Mitch deals one Chess piece against the other at that moment on the game board.
I guess most candidates for the Supreme Court know the process could be dragged out over months, even years.
So be ready for an uneven ride that may end up leading nowhere. It would still be an honor to ever have been nominated for that court, I would suppose.

Yes, this is one area where the Turtle has done very well and deserves praise, so far.

How would this strategy work? I thought the point was to have the vote long before the election to put pressure on the Red Sate Democrats to vote “yes” or face the wrath of the voters. Someone explain?

Cutting it close to a few days before the midterms. What happens if the Dems are successful in delaying the vote until after the elections? The Dems could do almost anything to get a few days delay.

That's the best gun-to-a-knife-fight move he's made in a while -- of course, the complete demolition of the case against President Trump is also going to hit ahead of the election, so the Demwits may welcome a wag-the-dog story for their media puppets to cover instead. Thanks cotton1706.

“Because judges are very important.”

Great minds run in the same rut. Famous
Chuckie Schumer quote:

“The judges are where it’s at.”

As I wrote elsewhere, it's easy to forget that McConnell was under awesome pressure - from the left AND right - to bring Garland forward for a vote. The MSM, Schumer, 16 Republican/RINO senators agreed to meet with Garland, BHO via The Wall Street Journal, and yet he stood his ground. Regardless of the reason, we got Gorsuch (thankfully).

McConnell is part of the DC Swamp problem, no doubt. Indeed, I STILL am not 100% sure why he put the kabosh on Garland...it certainly wasn't love of rules, it wasn't that he secretly hoped Trump would win, and maybe he really did want Hillary to win. Maybe Obama did something that REALLY got to him and he took this opportunity as payback.

RINOs don't like to appear partisan....they work for the Uniparty. That's why, for me, for McConnell take all that abuse in public (and probably in private) AND to go down in SCOTUS history as a figure with a cloud over his head over this nomination saga is VERY uncharacteristic.

Thus, I praise McConnell (R-Swamp) in this limited instance the same way McCain (R-Keating Five) is rightly trashed for his legislative service but is positively acknowledged for his war service.

You are more knowledgeable than me here so I’ll go along with your reasoning.

One thing I do know is that it’s trench warfare inside that Beltway. Whatever it takes to win.

Maybe Mitch has changed his opinion of Democrats since they started showing up harassing him and his Wife at their Home and when they go out to eat.

My best guess is that McConnel, despite being one of those long-term lifetime Senators, saw things going VERY downhill in the Obama years. He knew what quote-unquote ‘his’ Senate was like, and he saw what Obama and the Obama minions were doing to the prestige and respect of the Senate and he didn’t like that at all.

And so he’s taking his chance to stick it to them out of revenge.

And maybe Trump is playing positively on him as well.

Just a guess, though.
