NASA Director Says Agency Working Hard To End Reliance On Russian Engines

NASA has announced it is working diligently to end the reliance on Russian rocket engines after Russian politicians suggested Russia prevent any more deliveries of its RD-180 engines to the U.S., due to continued American sanctions on the Russian Federation.

Senator Sergei Ryabukhin said that Russia could limit the supply of missile power plants that are used by United Launch Alliance in the first stage of the Atlas V booster. So he commented on Moscow’s possible response to US plans to impose sanctions because of the “Fiddles” affair, reported Russian news outlet RIA Novosti.

America needs to build things again.

Not import from China and Russia.

Just saying...

So when Werner Von Braun died we let everything go to hell?

Everything went to hell in ‘64 when they killed Project Orion.

“At the end of July, Energomash announced that it had signed a contract for the delivery of another six RD-180s in 2020. “

We have the same type of vulnerability on transportation to the International Space Station. The only ride is with the Russians and we pay for that. It looks like Space X will have that capability by 2020, but that relies on Elon Musk.

We figured it out once, we can do it again.

Elon Musk seems to have figured it out.

Von Braun didn’t have CAD, he didn’t have FEA, he didn’t have 3-dimensional printing, or supercomputers, or computational fluid flow.

"Who thought this was a good idea in the first place."

Democrats and their Republican collaborators.

Try McDonnell Douglas. Oh wait, they’re gone alone with all the engineers, manufacturers, and oh yeah, the MISSION!

Not the RD180 technology. Closed loop combustion efficiency is theirs and we cannot yet duplicate it although we have new safer models that can come close to the impulse levels of the RD180

Yeah, but personally, I'm not comfortable with fuel pump turbines that have high-pressure side at 4800 psi so they can exhaust at 3000 psi into a white-hot combustion chamber, right next to a pump driving cryogenic high-energy propellant at 500 gallons per second into that same combustion chamber.

A little extra Isp doesn't seem worth the risk, at least not with humans on board.

I thought the von Braun team's solution of allowing exhaust from the fuel pump turbine to be used as coolant for the nozzle extension was clever. It allowed them to turn the turbine exhaust into a bit more Isp without having to rely on super-high-pressure and high temperature turbine housings, bearings, seals, fittings, etc.

What is just as important as anything having to do with the United States having to rely on Russian engines is to find the one individual who made that decision and put his punk ass in prison for the rest of his life.

It was thought preferable to Russian engineers selling their services to Iran or North Korea.

Like any space ship ... turn over at the half way point while firing engines or in this case bomblets.
