Plans for a sprawling "high-tech-meets-retail" metropolis have been unveiled in Dubai. The mega mall will be the largest leasable retail space in the world, spanning over 100 soccer fields in size.

Called Dubai Square, the $2 billion project in the Dubai Creek Harbour development will boast over 8 million square feet of retail space -- more than twice the size of Dubai Mall -- and will also be home to the Middle East's largest Chinatown.

Designed as a destination outright, the ground floor will host celebrity performances, concerts and theater shows in a futuristic entertainment arena with 3D projection mapping, theatrical sound and lighting. Families will be catered for with a cinema, water park, sports arena and supermarket. But it is the tech angle that most intrigues.

"Dubai Square pushes the boundaries of modern retail and leisure by drawing on next-generation technology," a spokesperson from Emaar Properties, who is developing the Dubai Creek Harbour in a joint venture with Dubai Holding, told CNN. "It is designed for the new era of customers, who are digital, connected and tech-savvy."

Features include immersive experiences, such as VIP dressing rooms, smart fitting rooms with interactive mirrors and curated private fashion collections....

I don’t understand the draw of Dubai. All it has is money and sand. Is it just a place for rich people to go to avoid the poor?

I went to Mall of Asia. That was pretty nice. They have a full size ice hockey rink inside. I went ice skating ⛸ there.

What’s amazing is that there are muslim countries that haven’t moved a day past the 7th century and muslim countries that are at the leading edge of the 21st century.

I’m sure there’s a moral to that story. I just do’t know what it is yet.

Having spent the better part of the last three years in the UAE supporting aerospace projects, I can say that their leadership has a vision and also the money to have others implement it. They need the “West” to make their country work.

The Emirate of Dubai( there are 7 emirates in the United Arab Emirates- like US States) was modernized because of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He’s a western Educated pretty cutting Edge thinking man. Anyway, he knows that the Oil money wont last forever so he heavily invests in other infrastructure that attracts the world’s travelers and that’s why Dubai is ahead of much of the rest of the region.

Beem there more than once and can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would pay to go there at all. It is precariously artificial and is maintained in its state only by massive expense.

I found much of the construction to be empty with only the facade finished.

Agree. I spent most of my time in Abu Dhabi which is a far better place to live and work. I don’t think Dubai will be able to last another 50 years (they are out of oil/gas). Will see.

But they seem to have been able to successfully merge islam and the west, whereas the rest of the world has not.

It may come to pass that the answer to the culture war between the west and islam will be found in the Emirates.

Since you’ve been there for three years, how did they do it? What part of Islam did they keep and what part of the west did they adopt? Can that be transferred to the west?

Also on a more personal note, how did you find life there. What did you like and didn’t like?
