“For some reason, when there’s a garbage can on a corner, it attracts litter.”

These week’s example of Leftist Logic. From Ed Driscoll, highlights mine:

New York City Removes Trash Cans on the Upper West Side:

trash cans overflow

What happened to the baskets? Did they get removed in anticipation of some windy weather? Surely the Department of Sanitation [DSNY] would soon restore the baskets – thereby easing the overflow trash – she thought.

A neighbor who shared her concerns called 311 and was told that the baskets had been removed because people leaving Riverside Park were putting their trash in them. “You can’t make this up,” says Melissa.

Nope.

Counterintuitive as it may seem, DSNY says having fewer trash baskets increases area cleanliness. “For some reason, when there’s a garbage can on a corner, it attracts litter,” DSNY Community Liaison Nick Circharo told West Side Rag. “The corner without a basket is the cleanest corner. If you take away the baskets, people will take their garbage elsewhere.”

I guess the concept is to send the trash home rather than have it overflow the existing facilities. Following that logic I would think that sanctuary cities like New York would be on board with sending the illegal aliens packing.

And cities like San Diego…

and San Francisco…

might want to find a home for all the itinerants wandering around leaving their human garbage all over the streets instead of hiring “poop patrols.”

The left seems comprised of certifiable idiots who, rather than raising the downtrodden up, seem committed to dragging the rest of us down into their muck.

In summer, with the influx of tourists and day trippers doing take-out in order to eat on benches scattered throughout the city, garbage frequently overflows the garbage bins. It’s still a pretty clean city compared to other cities. You don’t have this problem in winter.

>>rather than raising the downtrodden up

I don’t know about SF, but in NE Florida most homeless men are people who don’t want to show an ID to get help because of warrants.

Sounds more like a metaphor for our government than a simple observation regarding the placement of trash bins.

Perhaps they should empty the bins more often.

There are essentially no public trash bins in Japan except in train terminals. People carry their own generated trash with them in order not to litter. Of course, that takes an attitude about public cleanliness which would never take hold in the US.

The same thing used to happen at my former employer. One department was supposed to empty the trash but never did. My department cleaned the building (job sharing, no custodian). There was a trash can in the foyer near the time clock, the thing was always overflowing. You couldn’t miss it as it was under the time clock. The public also had to pass through this area. I finally removed the trash can and viola no more mountain of trash in the foyer.

Perhaps the trashcans are overflowing because there are corners without them. Maybe they simply need two trashcans on the busier corners, or maybe they just need to empty them more often. It’s not rocket science.

There are many places in the United States that are very clean. Usually they are small towns.

But what seems to drive leftists, generally, is a strong desire for a lack of responsibility and accountability.

Responsibility and accountability are the building blocks of a safe and clean society.

Trash cans on the corner do attract trash, and that is a good thing. What is not a good thing is when they aren’t emptied regularly.
