Hello! It's been a few months since my last report about the situation in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria hit on 9/21/17.
In my last report (December 2017), my Dad, who lives in Old San Juan, got intermittent power back on December 3rd. In June 2018, he indicated that he got through 2 straight weeks where the power did not go out at all, and last week he indicated that about "95% of the island has power restored". He says that he and others have gone through deep depressions because of continuous months without power.
It's been a stressful 11 months and they're in the middle of the new hurricane season now. The PR govt. is corrupt as ever and he says that they would have nothing and would be nothing if the US govt. had not been there to help. He says the Trump Administration has been amazing.
Cruise ships and tourism started coming in last November and have been a constant positive aspect in regards to tourists spending money on the island. One afternoon, he counted seven (7) cruise ships in San Juan Bay. Coffee and Rum production is also going strong.

He is Puerto Rican. I grew up there. I left at age 18 to go to college in N.H. and stayed here in the mainland U.S. I’m 52 years old.

It’s very developed — too much concrete, yet poverty in the countryside. I grew up in suburban San Juan and I enjoyed my childhood; great memories of growing up there. Too much governmental corruption.
I can’t believe it’s taken this long just for the electricity to be restored. I guess an island nation has its challenges regardless how close they are to the US.
Mrs S and I were talking about taking a vacation down there to help their economy what little we could. Sounds like it’s not time yet...
I’ll be there for 4 days at the beginning of November. (Voting absentee at the end of Oct. for the midterm election).
Hotels, Casinos & Restaurants in the Greater San Juan Area are up & running — and tours to the rainforest and the rum factories are also going good.
I usually go in October or Nov. (except for last week) to stock up on rum & coffee. They make great Christmas presents!

Larry has been on vacation — IN HAWAII!! — since last week. They’ve been evacuated from the Big Island to Oahu. He’s posting updates on his Facebook page.
