Ward shot herself in the foot, again and again.

Yeah I don’t think Ward ran a good campaign. Probably the right outcome (R forced to run to the right).

Even in Yavapai County, the most conservative county in AZ, McSally won decisively.

ARPAIO, JOE 7,862 25.12%
MCSALLY, MARTHA 14,201 45.38%
WARD, KELLI 9,054 28.93%
Write-In 176 0.56%

Arizona GOP primary voters had no choice, Ward and Arpaio were unelectable in a general election. Plus Ward’s campaign threw the primary race away with all its unforced blunders.

I’m surprised Arpaio got 25%. I thought the voters would see him as a spoiler who couldn’t win, but could hurt Ward, and that they would not vote for him. Many did vote for him and he was the spoiler.

I guess they don’t have runoffs in Arizona is no one get 50%+?

Reminds me of the Senate election in California in 1986. In the primary, eleven conservatives split up the vote so Ed Zschau (rhymes, appropriately, with Mao), the lone liberal, won with about a third of the vote.

Going into 1986, the seat was ripe for a GOP takeaway, but on Election Day in November, conservatives stayed home, voted third party, and some even voted for the Democrat, so the seat stayed blue.

Hate to say it since I actually donated to her — but I think we can officially declare her foray into politics to be a failure. She just says too many dumb things...
Need to find a new Constitutionalist challenger.

numbers I saw show Ward and Arpaio numbers still total less than McSally - so no blaming Arpaio isn’t the answer. too many Rino voters is more likely.

weird how they can call it with less than 30% of vote counted/reported only 5-6000 difference between ward and mcsally. maybe my math is off?

Sheriff Joe needs to read about the Peter Principle. He was great in his role that suited him well but let ego drive him to think he was electable in a race like this. Kelli needs to clean up her image for 2020. I would have LOVED to see her get the McCain seat but that is likely a long shot chance as this race was.

Blame Arpaio I guess.

McSally got 52% of the vote. Even if Arpiao had not been in the race Ward still would have lost.
