Muskegon kayak maker hiring machine operators (60 jobs in Michigan)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A large kayak manufacturer in Muskegon is adding 60 jobs immediately as it expands.

KL Outdoor recently merged with GSC Technologies to become Hemisphere Design Works, which brands itself as the world's largest maker of kayaks. The company announced in June that it would build a nearly 500,000 square-foot distribution facility in Muskegon.

The facility won't open until next year, but Hemisphere says it needs to hire 60 skilled machine operators now to keep up with growth and prepare for the expansion. The company is seeking people with varying levels of experience and says it will provide health insurance and 401(k)s on day one.

Hiring events are scheduled for Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon and Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sun Dolphin plant off E. Sherman Boulevard east of US-31. Applicants will tour the facility and participate in interviews.

More information about jobs can be found on the company's website, by emailing careers@hemispheredesignworks.com or by calling the company's hiring hotline at 231.739.2460.

Hemisphere says it expects to create more than 150 jobs over the next three years.

No mention of the wage or the wage range.

Disappointing.

If the wage is above average, it is almost always posted.

No mention of the wage or the wage range.

Considering Muskegon's economy is based on tourism, the building of a manufacturing plant will be a great addition to the community. At least the company will be providing a 401K, insurance benefits and employment with greater job security than what the seasonal job market offers......

I know a big time liberal wymen type who loves kayaking or did as of a few years ago.

That person would probably be mixed on this news.

Thanks, Bear.

I live in Seattle, and that manufacturing wage scale is about average around here.

Our cost of living is probably higher, especially rent, so I'll guess that's pretty good pay in Muskegon.

In Muskegon that is a solidly middle class wage.

Median price of a house in Muskegon is $63,300, in Seattle it says it is $437,400.

I hope that is not right because good grief!

I had to look up Muskegon on Bing Maps.

You are definitely on the forest and farmland side of Michigan.

I'll bet the northwest wind blowing off of Lake Michigan in January is, uh, invigorating!
