Amazon has been ramping up hiring in the 20 cities it shortlisted for its HQ2 search and Philadelphia is dead last in those efforts while Virginia, Boston and New York rank in the top three, according to a GeekWire report.
One can only wonder whether Amazon's hiring has anything to do its HQ2 search and the city it ultimately selects.
▪“A GeekWire analysis of Amazon job data provided by a third-party firm found that of the HQ2 finalists, offices in the Washington D.C. area — which includes three of the 20 regions on the short list in D.C. proper, Northern Virginia and Montgomery County in Maryland — had the most open positions over the past few months,” the GeekWire report said. “From May through July, Amazon had an average of about 841 open positions in D.C. and surrounding cities in Virginia and Maryland, which trails only the company’s hometown of Seattle and Silicon Valley — which is not an HQ2 finalist. Taken at face value, Amazon’s push in the D.C. area doesn’t mean the region is a shoo-in for HQ2. But it does suggest that Amazon sees the region as a talent pool teeming with possibilities. Access to talent is among the chief considerations for Amazon’s second headquarters.”
On Sept. 7 last year, Amazon announced it was in search for a second headquarters outside of its Seattle base. This sent economic development officials scrambling to mount efforts to respond to what the online retailer was seeking: a metropolitan area close to an international airport, with access to major highways; a site with direct access to mass transit; enough ground to build between 500,000 square feet to 1 million square in a first phase and up to a total of 8 million square feet in a third and final phase by 2027. At build out, it could be as much as a $5 billion investment.
In exchange, Amazon said it would eventually create upwards of 50,000 jobs that pay on average more than $100,000 a year and produce billions of dollars of other economic spin off.
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware officials submitted responses as did Philadelphia, Camden and some smaller communities throughout the region. While eager to get the word out about what each city or state had to offer, neither Philadelphia, Pennsylvania nor Delaware would disclose what tax-payer backed financial incentives they were willing to offer to lure the company to their respective areas.
Where Amazon will locate its HQ2 has been a bit of a parlor game ever since it issued the RFP. Amazon has said it intends to reveal the winning city sometime this year.
Spoiler alert: it’s going to be DC.
Amazon is well past the stage of monopolist behavior where the monopolist seeks control of the government in order to protect its franchise.
Any other city who spent a dime to entice Amazon was a fool to do so.
Regarding Boston, Amazon just has to have its eyes on the formerly known as Wynn casino property. The facility is close to the airport, it’s steps from Boston proper, and it’s just about the size of facility Amazon is looking for.
The owner of the Wynn Casino was #MeToo’ed out of his position by the board, correct?
So what are they now calling this Casino?
I just figured the owner was being given a hard time because he has openly voiced support for Donald Trump during and after the campaign.

The new name for the casino is Encore Boston Harbor. It is scheduled to open at some point next year.
Amazon put a distribution center here in Florida so with a local presence 7% sales tax kicked in. Wish they’d gone anywhere else although average salaries of $100K? Not sure I believe that one.

I think most people are betting on DC. Probably the most stupid business decision you could possibly make. I’ll even go and predict the building to be purchased....the Newseum (halfway between the White House and Congress).

We just learned they have already broken ground here (Bakersfield CA) on an Amazon facility that will hire over 1,500. Not sure when it opens. It was a big secret and a big surprise.
They’re calling it “Encore” now. I don’t know how that name was chosen.

We're 6% (state) + 1% Pinellas County, Florida) - other local taxes are higher but I don't think any are lower.
I believe it’s 6% state and 2:5% local, but that may be wrong.
