Friends in the Eye of the Storm

God bess Topsail, God Bless North Carolina. God Bless America

We may be thousands of miles away, however not just our thoughts and prayers but our very spirits are in the Holly Ridge area of North Carolina, where Barbara and Ronnie, our dearest friends on Earth, are sheltering from Hurricane Florence with beach resident friends Ardelle and Dennis, Hazel and hubby.

We had last been in touch with Barbara via email, up to 5:10 p.m, EDT yesterday and naively tried to telephone them at 6:00 a.m., this morning to tell them that not only us, but many of our friends were praying for their safety.

Been praying for all in the path of the storm, and for those in flood prone areas. I have family in SC. Thankfully they’re inland, but no guarantees..The ground is already saturated.

Wifey just spoke with her brother in Wrightsville Beach. No power and some trees down but all good for them right now. Her Dad lives up the road a bit and he’s ok too. So far so good.

shows some raging surf. Most cams not working.

I have no symathy for anyone who could evacuate and defiantly refused to.

I will reserve my sympathy for those too poor to evacuate or those physically unable to, for whateer reason. And for those evacuees who return to severe property damage and loss.

I have no sympathy for people who had sufficient warning, time, and money to book a hotel in Chatanooga or Louisville and wanted to ride out the storm instead, putting an unnecessary burden on rescuers. A pox on them. They should have evacuated, despite the inconvenience and uncertainty.

uh, millions of inland folks not in the evacuation zones will be seriously negatively impacted by flooding and lengthy power outages ...

Most hurricane damage is from flooding, not wind. I can’t fathom how someone can be too poor to not attempt to save their own life, especially in a hurricane with days and days of warning.

Going 5-10 miles inland is often more than enough. You can walk that in a few hours.

Many people are willing to offer their homes as shelter. Cities set up shelters in schools and fire halls.

My mom’s husband had to yell at his sister to leave her house on Myrtle Beach. She wasn’t poor, just stupid.

That said, an able bodied man who wants to ride out the storm and has taken proper steps, OK. A senior citizen widow like the lady I discussed is just stupid to hang around.

They will be fine. They will meet people on the way out of the area.
