A FReeper (not one of you) asked me by PM whether being mad as hell at the Church made you unfit for Communion, and/or whether having possibly a bad priest, made the sacrament invalid.

Thinking there may be more who are wondering, here is what you need to know:

Eucharist (conscration of Holy Communion) and Reconciliation (Confession) are both valid no matter what is the state of the soul of the priest. This is because

(1) the "action" is not done by the priest (by his natural power) but by Christ. Christ is the one who "acts" in the sacrament. If the priest was Judas the sacrament would still be valid, because it's not Judas' spirit that's at work here, but Christ's

(2) If it were not so, you could NEVER know if your sacrament was valid or not, because you can NEVER know if the priest has a secret sin. Even a hidden interior thing (like say, the priest has no faith and has become an atheist) can still be a mortal sin. But even he can do a valid sacrament.

The Church says the action is done "ex opere operato" (by the very action being done) BY Christ THROUGH even an unworthy priest.

BTW I confessed anger to my asst pastor just today. I said I was not sure if it was a sin, because actually anger CAN be justified and CAN motivate you to do the right thing.

My asst pastor said that a "just anger" is not a sin, but it can be hard to handle, and I should pray for the strength and wisdom to be angry justly, accurately and constructively, like Christ. "Be angry, and sin not."

Make sense?

Let's pray for each other to get--- and use --- the good kind of God-pleasing anger.

Well, thank you.

That being said, I need to add the following Lord of the Rings quote:

"I can add some more, if you like it," said Sam. "Calling your Chief Names, Wishing to punch his Pimply Face, and Thinking you Shirriffs look a lot of Tom-fools."

Yes, on both counts. I always try to turn my anger to prayers for justice and conversion of those doing evil. It’s not a perfect process!
