Tariffs
One thing we know for certain. Trump was talking trade policy and tariffs long before he ran. Even prior to the previous election. So imposing tariffs, ending the offshoring, and rebuilding American industry was I believe one of the primary reasons Trump ran.

Immigration
Likewise, immigration was a long time Trump target. No point in rebuilding American industry if you're going to leave the border open for foreigners to take the jobs anyway.
