Concealed Carry Corner: Situational Awareness – Do You Have It?

Even though I started writing this column days ago, apparently Wednesday was National Situational Awareness Day.
So much for my digital self-awareness.
But the timing couldn’t be better: The US Concealed Carry Association (USCCA)
dropped a hypothetical restaurant layout on their Facebook page a few days ago,
asking their readers to pick their preferred seat and why.
The idea may be overly simplistic, but anything that helps people literally open their eyes is probably worthy of a discussion.

So, looking at the above floor plan, what seat would you pick and why? ( graphic of restaurant seating arraingement at blog site)

"..I thought we could have a broader discussion on our surroundings, observations and how we interact as the environment as it changes around us.
Prior training a experience has given me a fairly good idea on how to analyze my surroundings for potential risks and possible mitigation.
That being said, I don’t consider myself an expert.
( The article continues with awareness suggestions)

G, D, or A, in that order.

Always try to have a seat with an unobstructed view of the entrance, if possible. If there’s as one way emergency exit, I want to be near it, if at all possible.

I go this from Heinlein:

Never sit with your back to the door. 999 times out of 1,000 it will not be your enemy coming through. But there is that 1,000th time.

And I don’t. The best spot looked like the corner table in a side seat away from the door so you can see the door well but don’t get trapped in the corner but can easily.

I read an interesting article by Skeeter Skelton many years ago on a similar subject.

Basically being aware, careful and determined are more important than skill.

I picked G also, facing the entrance.

Agreed. Seat 1, of course. Maybe A2

Agreed. G1 is best IMHO. Good sight lines, back against a wall, and someone coming in blazing is likely to shoot more towards A. D is better than A in that respect, but not as good as G.

Where is the emergency exits?

You can not make a valid choice without knowing that.

I would sit where I can see the entrances, and where nobody could sneak up behind me.

A 1 or 2

Not only can see who coming in front or out of kitchen, you can also scan to make sure the interloper has no allies in the restaurant or any potential problems from other diners and your back is against the wall..

C2 or F2, then B2.

999 times out of 1000 from these seats you can watch the pretty hostess work and get to the Restroom quickly.

If you have a CCWP you can shoot from cover of the inside corner. If not, throw chairs and plate at the guy and give the guy in the next table time to draw his 9 mm and shoot him.
