E-Verify Works, and That's Why Critics Hate It

American workers at the bottom of the income ladder benefit most from E-Verify, as they compete directly with undocumented immigrants for unskilled jobs. Arizona’s move to universal E-Verify particularly helped two groups of Americans – naturalized Mexican-Americans saw a rise in employment, while U.S.-born Latino men got a bump in wages.

One group likely to benefit from a national mandate would be African-American men; a study by Harvard labor economist George J. Borjas found that a 10% increase in immigrant workers at a given skill level causes a 5.1% drop in black employment.

E-Verify should be used to confirm your vote in heavily BLUE areas....

eVerify should come with the wall funding. Require it for all current and future workers, part-time or full-time, temporary or permanent. It really does not take that much time to use! Wish President Trump would insist more that it be included as it will help with ‘interior’ enforcement as much as the wall will with ‘external’.

ONE CITIZEN / ONE VOTE when enforced disenfranches minorities (somehow)

Barack Obama never explained why he doesn’t pass e-verify. Wouldn’t that be, even now, an interesting response???

Blacks used to dominate the masonry trade but were squeezed out by cheap illegal alien labor.

That and visa entry exit tracking could be implemented much faster than a wall could be constructed and may have as much or greater impact. A wall is a fine idea, but I thought it odd that it was by far the most talked about component during the campaign compared with other deterrents.

Yep. Though I think we know why — Dems want to keep the chain of migration going, so as to net millions of votes in future amnesties.

Of course it works. That’s why even Trump won’t pursue it. Just a people, don’t shoot the messenger.

My thoughts as well. In this age of computerized everything, it should not take much to track visa entry/exits and issue a bench warrant for the overstays. Penalties would include disbarment for ever entering this country again. Akin to self-deportation in some/many cases.

Absolutely. The ADIS system by which they track arrivals and departures needs to be improved and made a lot more stringent.

Here’s why I don’t like about E-verify. The government is requiring employers to do the government’s work. If gov did its job of keep illegal out, E-verify wouldn’t even exist.

I can understand that principled objection. There are a million mandates government puts on business that I don’t like.

But I think it’s important to weight the relevant harms:

1. The imposition of a quick, free employment verification check.

2. Literally 12-20 million illegal immigrants, with more on the way.

Placed side by side, prudence motivates me to choose #1, the vastly lesser harm...

Horse hockey. Garbage in, garbage out. Enter a stolen birth certificate or social security card or other ID and swear you’re that person. The system only verifies the name goes with the SS card not whether the person matches the ID.

Weird then that demographic researchers have found it’s having a major impact on the number of illegals in states where it’s used, if it’s such horse-hockey.

“The system only verifies the name goes with the SS card not whether the person matches the ID.”

From the article: “Further, DHS continues to refine and improve the process. For instance, employers can now upload a photograph to help snare impostors.”
