Bottonm line: She says she will not lead her party in a few years (lots of time to change that though) but she still wants to still lead her country as Chancellor. I expect the ploy will work just as she wants. Election after election in Germany we get breathless headlines about how much trouble Merkel is in, how her coalition is weakened, about how she might not hold on, yadda yadda yadda. And a month later she in firmly in power, doing whatever destructive things she wants and telling any who don’t like it to pound sand. Over and over and over. I expect that kabuki dance to continue through this election drama.
