Nutramax Laboratories Inc. will become Lancaster County’s largest manufacturer when it completes a $20 million expansion and adds 225 jobs near the city of Lancaster.

The additional jobs will bring Nutramax employment to 600 in two buildings in Lancaster Business Park.

“They are our premier manufacturer,” says Jamie Gilbert, executive director of Lancaster County Economic Development. In addition, the Henderson family has quietly made Lancaster County its headquarters for the entire company, relocating from Edgewood, Maryland.

“This is a reflection of free enterprise and shows the American success story is alive and well in our country,” says Todd Henderson, president and CEO of Nutramax.

The state of South Carolina announced the expansion at Nutramax Wednesday afternoon. One of those buildings in Lancaster Business Park — this one located at 946 Quality Drive — will get about a 150,000-square-foot addition and lots of new equipment, Gilbert says. Across the street at 851 Quality Drive will also get some of the jobs and expansion.

Steve Harper, chairman of Lancaster County Council, says Nutramax brought jobs to the county at a time they were needed, beginning in 2010.

“The company has brought manufacturing jobs to a community that was in desperate need of them and continues to invest in Lancaster County with new facilities and jobs,” Harper says.

Nutramax qualifies for county incentives, but the value of those incentives wasn’t immediately disclosed. County Council must also take a final vote on the incentives.

Nutramax last expanded in 2016, adding 125 jobs and spending $15 million on its plants and equipment. That brought the company up to almost 400 employees in two Lancaster Business Park buildings.

In 2010, the company promised to create more than 200 jobs here in exchange for $2.7 million in incentives.

The company makes vitamins and supplements for pets and other animals here.
