NBC Anchorman Chet Huntley At 7 AM Eastern Time Wednesday November 6, 1968-
I was watching Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on the morning of Wednesday November 6th, 1968 as I awoke around 7 am from a short nights sleep for an eight year old, probably not much more than four and a half hours.
We still didn't know who the next President of the United States would be but it was looking dim for Vice President Hubert Humphrey with Huntley wondering if votes were being deliberately held back by some states. Huntley remarked at one point:
"At the risk of getting some very bad fan mail as you mentioned earlier I sometimes wonder if some of these states hold back their votes on purpose..."
Huntley was a native of Montana, a Westerner, a warm friendly maverick libertarian who crossed the picket line during a TV strike in 1967 while David Brinkley honored it and Walter Cronkite at CBS walked it. I guess you could say Chet was a kind of Cliven Bundy IMHO. In fact, Chet loved raising cattle and did so in northern New Jersey while he anchored news in New York.
Uncle Walter chuckled at the notion of a Huntley political career when Chet retired in July 1970, but his retirement years would be too few in number as he passed away in 1974. Chet was in his own words, liberal on race but he was disenchanted at the end of the 1960's with the increase in the size and expense of the federal government.....

It would have been “President Bobby Kennedy” but a Palestinian immigrant shot him dead. So they pulled out the Hubert Humphrey replacement card. Meanwhile in the South, It was Wallace and Gen. Curtis LeMay ticket.
I remember an old bumper sticker sticker showing a caricature of a black woman with a big belly. The title was...”I WENT ALL THE WAY WIF LBJ!”
A few years later the same bumper sticker now declared...”NIXON’S THE ONE!”
I was born in 1962 so essentially I missed the 1960s, spending most of that decade soiling my diapers and watching Captain Kangaroo.
Too bad Huntley’s Big Sky Resort has been run by the the Boyne Kirchers for so long, though they do seem to have come around some in customer service since their purchase of Moonlight Basin and infusion of former Moonlight employees.
Nixon was a Progressive.
But there would have been a fair amount of difference without Watergate.
But I will never forget David Brinkley after Bill Clinton won reelection and spoke, on live tv Brinkley angrily told Cokie Roberts (and someone else I forget) that “Bill Clinton never said a damn thing worth listening to!” Great moment on tv.
Nixon differed from Johnson in rhetoric more than policy, at least on the domestic front. That never stopped liberals from hating him, giving him no credit for signing their pet bills into law, nor did it stop many conservatives from admiring and defending him. Nixon, like the Bushes, was a textbook example of rhetoric trumping policy reality.

Had Nixon been held to less than 270, what deal would Wallace have extracted from him?
Never could understand why some of you go right along with the Left in attacking President Nixon.
1. We had an all-consuming Cold War going, with JFK nearing taking us into thermonuclear war at least twice.
2. We had a long-distance war going in Vietnam. I should know, since I was there.
3. The Arab-Israeli war just finished the June ‘67 portion and was heading towards Sadat’s offensive over the Suez Canal in’73
4. We had the Space Race going, spending billions of dollars to get to the moon ahead of the Soviets
5. We had the Civil Rights struggles going on, with major and deadly riots in several cities.
Nixon successfully dealt with all of these things and was primarily responsible for setting the stage for ending the Cold War.
The Left hounded him for his entire political life and successfully engineered the coup that ended his presidency.
The alleged “conservatives” who invented reasons not to support him share in the responsibility for the effects that continue today.
I loved watching it. Then and now.

I think Brinkley was either an old school liberal or actually a republican.
Rush knew him personally, and knew where his politics lied.
He wouldn't give up his old friend but he said:"I can't tell you that, but let me tell you that Brinkley HATES taxes. You can figure it out yourself what his politics might be."
Yes. George probably would have done very well, if he’d been in a different state.

I went to a 1968 George Wallace rally in Indiana - he was drawing huge crowds. That carried into 1972 when Wallace ran as a Democrat. He would have won the nomination if that nut hadn’t shot him.
Now you know where to go when you want to put a smile on your face. 8>)
