Politics at the Beach

Red tide is a common name for a worldwide phenomenon known as an algae bloom (large concentrations of aquatic microorganisms—protozoans or unicellular algae) when it is caused by species of dinoflagellates and other algae.

I was hoping, that during our vacation, I could get away from politics and just enjoy the beach, the white sand, the sea gulls, the dolphins, and the Floridian sun-shine. But politics hit me in the face in one form or another in this area overflowing with snow-bird Democrats from New York, New Jersey, and Ohio.

Last year NGOs used young, beautiful, and half-clad women on the beach to advocate for legalizing marijuana. This year we were assaulted by greens urging naïve pedestrians in affluent areas to fill out questionnaires to save marine life. Tugging at their heart strings, it was an easy sell for donations to various environmental and conservation groups.

The red tide has been devastating this year here in central Florida west coast, as it is every 20 years or so and has been for millennium. Democrats have been screeching about pollution throughout the summer. When MOTE marine research laboratory held a week long conference on red tide and concluded it is a completely natural phenomenon the libs were ballistic. How can anything this bad be natural, they cried?
in normal years we have daily air currents blowing east to west that keep the algae in deep water where its effects are minimal. This year there were virtually no winds from the east and the tide was pushed to shore where it killed everything in shallow water.
We have a choice here in FL. We can have hurricanes or we can have red tide. Both are completely undesirable. Sometimes this is not paradise.
