Why Whole Foods Is America’s Angriest Store
Observer ^ | • 05/01/15 12:23pm | Nils Parker

The problem with Whole Foods is their regular customers. They are, across the board, across the country, useless, ignorant, and miserable. They’re worse than miserable, they’re angry. They are quite literally the opposite of every Whole Foods employee I’ve ever encountered. Walk through any store any time of day—but especially 5:30pm on a weekday or Saturday afternoon during football season—and invariably you will encounter a sneering, disdainful horde of hipster Zombies and entitled 1%ers.

They stand in the middle of the aisles, blocking passage of any other cart, staring intently at the selection asking themselves that critical question: which one of these olive oils makes me seem coolest and most socially conscious, while also making the raw vegetable salad I’m preparing for the monthly condo board meeting seem most rustic and artisanal?

If you are a normal human being, when you come upon a person like this in the aisle you clear your throat or say excuse me, hoping against hope that they catch your drift. They don’t. In fact, they are disgusted by your very existence. The idea that you would violate their personal shopping space—which seems to be the entire store—or deign to request anything of them is so far beyond the pale that most times all they can muster is an “Ugh!”

Over the years I have tried everything to remain civil to these people, but nothing has worked, so I’ve stopped trying. Instead, I walk over to their cart and

Glad it wasn’t just me that experienced the anger and ignorance of some Whole Foods shoppers.

Wow, if it’s anger Nils wants to observe, all he has to do is look in the mirror. What a pathetic loser.

Don’t shop there. You’re supporting psycho libs and all their neuroses. I see enough of these uppity types in other grocery stores. Why go to the hive?

“Over the years I have tried everything to remain civil to these people, but nothing has worked, so I’ve stopped trying.”

It appears the writer has an addiction to Whole Foods.

Get help.

Find a 12 Step Program.

Get into a Whole Foods rehab program.

Admit you have a problem.

Never been in one of those stores. Good thing, I would likely get in trouble.

I would go to a large Whole Foods store about once a year to get deli food from the various 9 dollar per pound food isles. Usually, I would get about 16 one once selections of hot and cold foods. Delicious. The price went up to 9.50 per lb. still worth it. And then, I would pay and sit down and eat. The prices in the isles were so very expensive for the take home and cook raw foods that I wondered why would anybody bother to shop there. The snobs who spent lots of money there just seemed to be elitist with arrogant attitudes. You know like zero consideration for other human beings. I have not been back there in about 2 years. After I shop at the Bread outlet store I will have to remember to revisit the Tiffany Plaza Whole Foods again. Probably 10.00$ per pound by now. Still more than likely delicous.

That article is pretty much textbook, the nail meeting the head of the hammer.

Liberals: A group of people that have been brainwashed into thinking one way because they can’t really think for themselves; they don’t really believe in any of it and live the most hypocritical lives; they are the ultimate “keeping up with the Jones’”; they hate the fact that they aren’t honest with themselves; they want to be superior to everyone in every way, but deep down know they are not and never will.

I’m sure I missed a few things, but all of that, and then some manifests in their hatred for everything that isn’t like them. If you don’t live in their neighborhood, or one like it, you’re a heathen, savage, right wing, redneck who has no place in the world to do nothing but dig ditches. You are the uncouth masses that don’t deserve to share the same space as them.

That’s a great article. I’ve never been to Whole Foods - the people I know who have gone have said ‘never again’ because of the prices. But I will have to go now, just to people watch ;-)

I've shopped at Whole Foods a grand total of twice. Both times, it was during a time where my wife and I were doing our best to eat healthy. Once was in Seattle, and the second time was in Bellevue (a city right next to Seattle that's three times as pretentious as Seattle is, if that's even possible). Although we didn't run into a 'Birdman', as the author had, I felt an air of general disdain coming from everyone there EXCEPT the staff. They were as friendly and helpful as can be.

Now, I cannot say the same about a local Seattle 'Whole Foods-clone' called PCC Markets. I shopped there once. My wife was with me, as were my 3 (at the time) children. Two were in a stroller, and the oldest, who was about 4 or 5 at the time, was walking. They weren't screaming, or running about the store making mischief, but stayed close and relatively quiet.
The looks we were getting from the patrons AND the staff made me feel as though they thought one of our kids had dropped trou and shat on the floor. Apparently, having kids in there was verboten...or maybe having as many kids as we had was a sign that I was NOT one of those 'reduce-the-population-to-save-the-planet' people.

I have not shopped there again, nor will I ever let them have a cent of my hard-earned pay.

The people here are crazy at times and prices are high on some stuff so I only go to Whole Foods for special occasions or if I am on the road and want to eat something healthy. To keep the cost down, I stick to what I can carry with my hands: starting with their excellent bar or a Fake Bacon BLT sandwhich that is to die for, a snack or two, energy drink or protein drink and/or a Vegan ginger snap cookie - delicious. Apples are good too and they have real rye bread! I need to lean how to cook healthy foods though because all my eating out every other day is costing me a small fortune.

For a long time I've been telling people that they were being scammed at Whole Foods - and I've been proven right several times over!

From short selling the weight of the foods to the bogus ORGANIC labels on their products, that place reminds me of the scams that the Pharisees did to the people back in Jesus's days.

It's so incredible how just the mere presence of label saying ORGANIC will drive up the price of an item by 500% or more!
