Beto O’Rourke dodged a bullet. The Texas congressman came dangerously close to beating Ted Cruz on Tuesday.
Lest his groupies wallow for long in defeat, they should know there’s a lot for them to like about his loss: No getting bogged down in the drudge-work of a freshman senator in the minority or obligation to fulfill his duty to serve out his term.
And, to O’Rourke’s credit, there was no blowout, a fate that would have extinguished his star. Indeed, he showed an unapologetic liberal could compete and almost win in Texas.

Texas voters rejected him.
He is finished.
He will not run for office again.

This whole run was just the next step toward a 2020 run. Hence the odd “national” feel of his senate run.
Because we know this is the route that ones like JFK and LBJ took, wasn’t it?
Some are arguing that he had no intention of winning. His goal was to get the infrastructure set up for 2020. This really does explain a lot of weird stuff, not least of which was the tone and words in his “concession” speech.
At least JFK and LBJ won their Senate seats.

His backing of a Dem-proposed semi-auto ban and support for illegal immigration were not winning proposals for a statewide race in Texas. But were meant to push him forward in the Bernie wing of the national party.
If Beto cannot win Texas, with its liberal cities of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Round Rock, San Marcos, Austin, El Paso, and Fort Worth, Beto cannot win in America.
