Lauren Young: Soldier, Patriot, Athlete, Gun Girl
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 11/9/2018 | F Jardim

No phony 'gun bunny,' this former Army MP who served in Afghanistan enjoys long-range shooting and is an Instagram-era Second Amendment, concealed carry and female empowerment influencer.

The increasing number of women taking up shooting for self-defense and recreational purposes is shifting the demographics of the shooting sports community in huge and very positive ways. Shooting was never purely a man's pursuit, but social mores prevalent in my generation made women on the range a rarity. Back in the Reagan era, if you saw a female on the range, she was almost certainly there with her boyfriend or husband, "trying it out." If memory serves, this frequently took the form of the gentleman providing ego-enhancing instruction in the manly art of shooting to the fairer sex neophytes.

Around that time I taught my mother, sister and at least one girlfriend how to safely handle firearms for their protection. I remember their looks of mild anxiety during their first shots but they all quickly gained proficiency and confidence and even started to enjoy it…and then never shot again. Their abandonment of shooting wasn’t because it wasn’t fun; it was because they felt out of place and uncomfortable in what they saw as a “boy’s club” hobby. Somehow, thank goodness, this has finally changed. One of the agents of that change is Lauren Young and if you don’t already know who she is, you will.

Lauren is a bona fide defender of the U.S. Constitution, a devoted advocate of physical fitness, a lover of the outdoors, a serious shooting hobbyist, a patriot, a U.S. Army veteran, a college graduate with a dual B.A. in Pre-Law and Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, with an unquenchable thirst for learning, and an Instagram sensation. To her credit, she made herself all of these things with the exception of the last one, and that is extremely important to understanding who she is NOT. Though she is strikingly beautiful, she is no narcissist and certainly no phony “gun bunny” like you sometimes see at shooting sports show venues. Read the rest of Lauren Young Patriot.

Reading the article she sounds like a pain in the ass with a chip on her shoulder. Mad that a gun store employee indicated where the trigger was on a firearm — she thinks he uses this “joke” on many women.

I’ve taught women how to shoot...And I have indeed had to go over things like where the trigger is and how it works. It’s just a fact that many women know less than nothing about guns. Maybe because of the type of movies guys tend to watch, video games, whatever, all the guys I’ve introduced to shooting instinctually know at least how to pick up, point and shoot.

The future Mrs. Leonard F Mason!

Just kidding, but that is a woman I could get behind....IF she ran for office.

I love to shoot rifles and handguns. When I was in high school I was on my Dad’s NRA sponsored “Rifle Team”. We competed against the Demoleys. I still shoot and love to use new types of guns (new to me, that is). Now with RA I am not thrilled to have to pull the slide on any handgun.
I now like revolvers much better.

The most fun I’ve ever had was in OR with a dear friend of mine who took me shooting, all different kinds of shooting and guns and different targets. One thing I will never forget was shooting a steel turkey off a stump at 400 meters with a buffalo gun. Knocked across the floor 3 feet, bruised my shoulder something aweful but the turkey ‘died”. Ha!

Do you even read your comments before posting or just go with the instinct to "point and shoot" (your foot). LOL! This woman routinely shoots a Desert Eagle. She could likely slap you upside the head with it, take your weapon and cuff you inside of 30 seconds. But thanks for the morning humor. Mr. GG2 and I are still chuckling. He was just asking me how much more range time I had to put in to overcome that lack of instinctual point and shoot 🔫. Bwahahaha!

Never competed but I've loved shooting and hunting for almost 1/2 a century.

Just bought Mom a S&W Shield .380 EZ.

Very nice trigger and it's made for those that have difficulty racking a slide.

I have both semis and revolvers.

Love 'em both.

Well I’m glad you’ve had a laugh but you entirely missed the point of what I said. Every guy I’ve taught to shoot knows how to pull the trigger, rack the slide on a semi, look down the sights, etc — the very basics of operating a firearm. I assume it’s related to consuming entertainment that shows guns. I’ve taught girls who literally did not know which end is which, simply because for many women it’s not something they imbibe through entertainment and if they have’t been taught there is no reason they would know — there are of course men that fall into that same category. With that being my own experience, I’m not surprised a gun-store owner might point out a few basic things about a firearm to any customer who may not know anything. Her reaction smacks of “do you know who I am” or just a chip on her shoulder.

I don’t understand the significance of her “routinely shooting a Desert Eagle” that you felt it important to mention.

As for the rest...That little adage about nobody on the internent knows you’re a dog...I could be 6’6” and 300 pounds, I could be wheelchair-bound with an oxygen tank strapped to my seat. You have no basis for believing she could “probably” beat me up except that you’re feeling high on muh girlpower or something. The primary reason I encourage the women in my life to become proficient with firearms is BECAUSE women are at a physical disadvantage and guns are the great equalizer. Gotta’ know your limitations.

Look you said men just have an instinctive knowledge to pick up a gun, point and shoot which is total BS. I called you on it and you wrote an essay deflecting and trying to work your way around to insulting me because you can't defend that statement. What you should have said is more men than women are familiar with firearms and how they operate. That's a factual statement. Men tend to be more interested in firearms than women it's not an instinctive knowledge from birth. When you get a nice write in a major gun blog let me know. 😆

You must have the attention-span of a gnat if you think ~250 words is an essay :) I'll try to stay brief going forward.

In my first comment I referenced entertainment as a possible reason that in my experience men are better shooters when first picking up a gun than women. "Instinct" isn't the strictly correct word to use but I would think that point shooting/instinct shooting and other such terms are familiar enough to people who shoot that you'd get the drift, rather than be intentionally obtuse are start talking about fixed action patterns.

I don't know if you're projecting, but most of us have no aspiration to write for blogs. Maybe you could do a piece about how routinely shooting a Desert Eagle hones your ability to slap and cuff people.

Just give it up. You made an asinine statement that is pathetically untrue and now you are still trying to parse your way out of it. Why can’t you just be happy for a former veteran and excellent shootist who enjoys firearms?

I notice that you stand out as the lonely wart on this thread. Men who are comfortable in their own skin generally appreciate and welcome women in the shooting sports. Then it seems there is you.

My statement is entirely true, most of all because it has been couched entirely with the caveat "in my own experience." You just don't like it, for whatever reason.

I also notice your goldfish attention span strikes again -- the entire basis of my comments has been based on the difference I see between men and women I have personally taught when first starting the shootings sports, from which you someone extract that I'm not welcoming to women who shoot. Huh?
