Wait, When Did They Bring Back Murphy Brown?

If you're old enough to remember 1988, you know it was a terrific year for sitcoms. The Cosby Show was the #1 show in America, and Roseanne was hot on its heels. Cheers, The Golden Girls, Night Court, The Wonder Years -- it was a great time for comedy. And in addition to all those classics, another show also premiered that year: Murphy Brown.

Based on my meticulous research 30 seconds of Googling and my vague memories from 30 years ago, Murphy Brown was an ensemble workplace comedy about a TV journalist who yelled a lot, and it was funny because she yelled a lot. As noted pundit Jon Gabriel puts it, it was "basically The Mary Tyler Moore Show without laughs."

Oh wow.

Another left wing unfunny sitcom which only has anti-trump jokes.

In the fall of 1990 I got rid of my TV and an counter intuitive thing happened..... when I would catch a show in a hotel or somewhere something odd happened. Nothing was entertaining. Shows weren’t funny. You would think I would be desperate for something to entertain me, but my standards went up not down. This also spread into movies. Which are so insanely slow to me I can’t sit through them. The other thing I realized is..... I don’t NEED to be entertained. I have a fun compelling and interesting life. I have friends, I am highly active, and I now have a sense that some idiot writer is NOT entitled to me or my attention. I have also developed a sense that my time is valuable, they should be paying me to watch their show. Ask yourself this question..... What did Americans do before Radio, TV and the movies? They, invented and tinkered in their shops, especially in the winters. Now we have given over all of our creative attention to a not funny tv show and commercials. That is a huge loss.

For those who hated men, marriage and whole families. I had already stopped watching television then.

Yeah, there's hardly anything worth taping on my VCR any more. I'm thinking of not even replacing it when it finally breaks.

“basically The Mary Tyler Moore Show without laughs.”

I acyually downloaded a new episode and watched it ( suffering for truth).
It was much less than that. It was sheer artistic awfulness. Vacuous as a CNN ‘news’ segment.

They only had one character worth watching anyway.

Wow - I watched the clip of the reboot from the article.

It featured a reporter in the hospital who had been beaten up by a bunch of red-hat-wearing Trump supporters.

It's had about 2 semi-amusing episodes, ones that echo the show from the 80s. Naturally, they were ones that focused on actually doing news and less about taking shots at Trump or making a statement (instead of being funny). Still, in those cases, they still needed to take shots at "the Wolf Network".

They made Fox the big bugaboo, but wouldn't mention their name. Hannity did get a mention in the first episode (just one more person Murphy can't get along with) but then they brought Peter Gallagher as a Hannity stand-in, working for that Wolf network again.

Great point.

Well covered in F451 and The Matrix.

I don’t watch TV and certainly don’t miss it.

I saw it tonight in passing and watched. The newsroom watched one of their reporters cover a Trump rally. When Trump left the stage, the reporter left the press area, and was promptly beaten up and put in the hospital by 5 people in MAGA hats.

After seeing him in the hospital, a younger reporter locates the people who beat him up in a redneck bar. He
starts to argue with them and they beat him up too.

Murphy is later interviewing a man about a story that for the first time in 8 years (since Obama) homelessness has gone up. The GOP guest says that is because they like being outdoors and they like to camp. Everyone expects Murphy to launch into him, but instead, sounding like a hostage in a video, she stiffly and under duress explains that homelessness is found in all administrations.

When they all incredulously ask why she was defending the guest, she said she is now afraid to speak her opinion honestly because she might get reporters hurt.

A blonde ditz reporter in the newsroom pulls out a 38 revolver and talks about how nobody needs to worry, she has the safety on!

She explains she got it for her birthday when she was a kid and now she has a permit. She keeps it near a sex toy in her bedroom saying both of them relieve her stress.

They go to a bar to discuss how bad America is becoming. The news director gets a threatening phone call, the 4th one today.

It was very sick.

I need to go shower now with lava soap.

Even then, Poppy was Hi1ter in the flesh and Murphy Brown was there to say so and also to remind us how dim-witted Dan Quayle was.

There’s a number of shows over the past forty years which aren’t really entertaining. Saturday Night Live....for the first two or three years, was a great show, but if you tried watching it over the past decade....it’s garbage. China Beach and Knight Rider were not entertaining. Melrose Place was not entertaining. 90210 was not entertaining. The first five years of MASH was funny, but the later years were lousy. Coach was not entertaining. Silver Spoons was a total loser.
