The Gulag forced-labor camps in the USSR were a good thing as prisoners worked there to the benefit of the state, a 23-year-old local MP in Yekaterinburg said, and was slammed online as a monster in need of a history lesson.
Gulag is, actually, a good thing. Previously, the people were sent to work under supervision at least, there was some benefit from them. But now, the inmates rapists and murderers just drink builders tea and do nothing, while we waste our money on them, Andrey Pirozhkov, a recently-elected Communist Party MP in the Yekaterinburgs local parliament, told The Village.
Pirozhkovs controversial statement went viral and caused a vast public outcry, forcing the young politician to look for excuses.
I support adopting the idea of labor camps, but without the cruelty, lawlessness and abuse of power that existed in Soviet years. In modern Russia, labor camps should become an absolutely legal, fair and humane punishment."
His Facebook followers were quick to point out to the MP that his explanation turned out even worse than the awful original statement.
Some suggested that Pirozhkov and his Communist comrades should be the first to try out the new Gulag for themselves.
Learn some history, boy, one of the users urged, while another pointed out that the young politician lacked knowledge on the state of the modern Russian prison system as well. All inmates in the colonies work nowadays. The only exception is those serving a life sentence, he said.
No matter if the Stalins labor camp system was good or bad you should be careful. Its sensitive subject, one of the comments read.

Interesting. So the Russians themselves see the evil in Soviet rule... unlike the Democrats.
In other words: We will get it right next time, because we will put the right people in charge!
I’m all for work farms.
As long as the warden isn’t the one from “Cool Hand Luke”
“What we have here is a failure to communicate, and that’s the way he want’s it”.
Theres a forehead that needs a .45 diameter bunghole right between his eyes.
I notice they elect people from a new Communist Party, though.
We have plenty of prison work farms in Texas.
You screw up and you get an all expenses paid vacation to one of our gulags.
What’s why I only ever committed crimes in NY and NJ :)
One of the easy navigational landmarks for aircrews flying the perimeter of FT Hood at night are the state prisons all lit up on the outskirts of Gatesville along the north side of the training area. I think there must be three or four prison units there alone.
You go to do time at Gatesville, and you might as well be on another planet.
Stalin thought he could develop the country with forced labor so plenty of innocents on trumped up charges were sentenced. I see no problem with this politicians stand. Humane? Hard to believe but doable. I’d send American convicts(volunteer) to serve out their time of Russia feeds and houses them. Throw in an offer of citizenship in Siberia for good behavior.
Thats a good idea. I wonder if Pooti-Poot would take all of our MS13 mongrels off our hands?
There is just something in the Russian character....
Just your average liberal Democrat hipster soiboi beta cuck.
I think prisoners should work to repay their debts too, but to praise gulags as they once were is sick. Stupid commie.
Looks like Occasional-Cortex may have a man stupid enough for her...
So young to be a stupid communist drunk, but that’s often the only entertainment they have in the old Gulag state.
Kremlin itself is constantly whitewashing Soviet crimes and now acts surprised that these sorts of people pop up and get elected. Russia is a mess.
