FLINT, Michigan — Lear is planning a massive three-day hiring effort to fill 400 open jobs at its new Flint manufacturing facility: Resumes can be dropped off 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 3-5 at the new Lear plant, 902 E. Hamilton Ave. in Flint.

Pay starts at $13.85 for the positions, which are permanent, with a second- and third-shift premium of $0.30 per hour. Lear also offers annual pay increases as well as health benefits including low-cost medical, dental, and vision coverage after 90 days of employment. Employees also are eligible for 401(k) and paid vacation time after one year of employment.

Lear opened its new seat manufacturing plant in August on 30 acres of what used to be known as Buick City. The Flint site joins a family of over 260 Lear facilities around the world. Lear is a top General Motors supplier and rates 148 on the Fortune 500 list.

Lear expects to employ more than 600 employees when it reaches full production in 2019.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and be available to work any shift as well as weekends and overtime when needed.

The job requires employees to perform physical activities, including being able to lift and carry heavy objects, stand for long periods of time, make quick repetitive movements with hands and wrists, and operate pneumatic tools.

Once hired, employees must be able to pass a background check, physical demands test and hair-follicle drug screen.

If you are unable to attend the resume dropoff event, resumes also will be accepted after Jan. 5, 2018, at flintjobs@lear.com.

Headline reenforces the devastatingly false premise that jobs are a commodity.

My father worked for 35 years at the Industrial Ave plant 31 that became part of Buick city. The plant he worked at was the site of the sit down strike that birthed the UAW. The cause of the sit down strike was poor working conditions and low wages. Looks like full circle to me.

A little off topic, but the old Packard plant in Detroit was featured om “Mysteries Of The Abandoned” a while ago. It was so interesting! I suppose it’s too delapidated to be converted to a functioning plant again, but the plant was built with some futuristic ideas for that era.

I saw that, that is a very cool place. Just north east of this new Lear plant, which is small by most automotive plant standards, anyway, just near it is the site of the old Cheverolet final assembly plant where in the 60’s Impalas were made, I believe that is where Chevy made the Corvettes, only the first year.

I was born in Flint in 55, the city was a thriving place until about the time i graduated high school in 73, i went active duty in 75, never looked back. Flint has been in a state of decay ever since.

Perhaps you're thinking of Dearbornistan, home of the largest Muslim population in the United States?

Have you ever read the book “Rivethead”? I’m curious if it squares with your memories.

I did some searching and reading, sounds like an accurite account. Ben, the author worked at the truck plant on the south side of flint, i left flint in mid 1970’s, his accounting is 1980’s through 1991. I believe he has a great book, i will look for it.

People don't just "fill" jobs like gravel in a bucket. A job is a calling. No two jobs are exactly the same. No two laborers perform the same way.

I get it that there is lots of new Lear opportunities in Flint and I grateful to God for them. I hope they make a lot of great products!

I thought that I had read that they had also moved in to Flint.
