There is too much gun control legislation being proposed lately. As the election cycle heats up, Presidential hopefuls are making big promises about banning guns, gunsmithing kits, and of course, the venerable and much-loved AR-15.
I'm taking a small departure from the regular newsreel and discussions about gun control, to instead talk about something a little more fun in the blog section: Anti-gun control. Politicians have said too much, and you want to build an AR-15 from scratch. You might have no idea where to begin. This guide's going to teach you everything you need to know to get started.
The rifle we’re piecing together in this guide is a typical AR-15 with a 16" barrel, chambered in 5.56/.223. That’s the gold standard for nearly all black rifles (you can customize later). If you want to keep your rifle un-registered (which is perfectly legal in most states), you'll also want to consider an 80 percent lower - a receiver blank with no serial number. First, we’ll look at the relevant gun laws and answer some questions you probably have. Next, we’ll explain every part you need to build your own AR-15 kit, including which parts are best for a well-rounded, affordable rifle.

Does one need a milling machine for the 80% or will a drill press or even a hand held electric drill work?

I prefer the 300AAC blackout. Works well on Kentucky whitetail super and subsonic. Built on a palmetto state upper and lower with guts from midway. Simple as pie with no need for special tools but they do make life easier.
Since then i have read that folks are having good luck with a subonic 6.8 spc with a 1:7 twist barrel. Military is suppose to be going to a non-spc 6.8. I’d wait on any new ar’s until we see what they got.
Not a huge fan of the 223 but it’ll do in a pinch.
I've seen them made using a drill press and jigs, but some claim difficulty in connecting the holes to make slots. Your mileage may vary. Some are touting plunge routers with end-mill bits.
Agreed, it will work fine. (My post was just a lame joke on my screen name). I have zero against smaller caliber weapons.
What is the best caliber? 223 556 or 308. Can I use the same ammo as in my Savage .308 bolt action?

Also, was just reading up that the some jigs will work well with a drill press, but the issue is side-load on the chuck and potential injury (drill presses don't like side-load).
Drill presses weren't designed for side-load, but with the right types of bits and jigs, it can be done, slowly.

I guess tax-wise they have to have a record of sales... but is it necessary that names and addresses be recorded, that would be my question.
President Trump is going to leave office one day and eventually the Liberals will be in a position to pass a raft of anti-gun legislation, and these lowers will be on the list. Banning begets confiscation and business records are a logical starting point for the BATF&E to know where to start breaking in doors at 3AM, stomping cats and pushing pregnant women around before shooting their husbands.
Do any of our members KNOW of a vendor that has ORIGINAL Colt’s RVN era parts kits, at “less than scalper’s prices”, now.
3+ years ago I bought a circa 1970, all Colt, M16 parts kit from an out-of-state vendor that arrived & all the parts LOOKED “new & unfired”.
(That company has no kits left & expects to receive no more.)
My RVN-era “M16-clone” was assembled on a “Texas Flag” lower (by RUNNER RUNNER of TX) & with a 1/8 20” barrel.)
It looks/shoots beautifully with every sort of 5.56NATO ammo that I’ve tried, btw.

80% blanks are--legally--just hunks of steel and have nothing whatever to do with the gun industry.

Right - got it. So are fender washers. BATF&E and the law? There is no intersection.
Businesses need to make it clear to their customers that some future administration won't be able to get a court order for sales history from one of these companies - because they will have no sales history - because they have a policy of destroying any record that has a name and address on it after the item is sent.
Which means I can't be buying these things on line with a credit card...
Am I being paranoid enough? Time will tell.
