Today at Lunch I Was Living THE CHILDREN OF MEN BY PD JAMES.
Children of Men by PD James ^ | 2.01.2020 | chickensoup

Today I went to lunch with a new Ladies Who Lunch group. This group was socioeconomically upper middle class, aged 50 to 74 Caucasian, all married, some on second marriages, and all were parents and most were grandparents.

These women spoke tenderly and lovingly with tears spilled at times, over their ....dogs.

Not that I want to dismiss dogs, wonderful pets that they are, but the care that these 10 ladies and their spouses lavished on their pets was quite something to behold.

They mentioned their children and grandchildren, but the pictures that were brought up on their phones to share, were: dog pictures.

It was spooky at times as they traded names of dog massage specialists, vets, and all spoke of sleeping with Bowser.

I felt as if I was in a re-make of CHILDREN OF MEN, a better than the original film which was in no way true to the book, and was instead, a leftist screed.

The premise of the book: "In the near future, for inexplicable reasons, humans have lost the ability to reproduce. The backdrop of this story is the slow descent of a dystopian decay. As others have noted, there is no cataclysmic event that sends this world into spiraling chaos. No asteroid has crashed into the planet and spread a galactic virus. Instead, people just stop having babies and slowly and steadily, things just get weirder and weirder. People are just going on with life with no youth about the place to inherit their progress and mistakes. Interestingly, the natural world is gradually creeping back into the life of man, squeezing in from all sides. The wilds of the world are returning."

As I sat and listened to these women talk about what is really important in their lives, I felt a breeze of the wildness that is encroaching on this world. As the strengths are sapped the civilized die, there will be a wilding.

A friend of mine (this age group) has a daughter who should be marrying age, or at least be able to keep a significant other.
Instead, she’s devoting all of her love and attention to her dog.
I find it sad and a little creepy.

Too funny. someone was raising a ruckus with loud music in our neighborhood last weekend. It wasn’t too late - about 9:30 PM and it didn’t last very long.

You should have read the complaints on social media (nextdoor.com) that came up - a string of (white), pampered, suburban, middle-age leftist women (yes, I see their political signs on their lawns) - all complaining their “rescue pets” were anxious about the noise.

No one said “my kids can’t sleep,” or anything similar.

It’s coming. And It’s completely voluntary. Part of it has to do with increasing life spans I think. And partly, I think we take the side benefits of a modern society and try to turn those benefits into pillars of society.

Lefties demand charity and compassion - from other people. It’s not them, as individuals, who will be showing true kindness, or digging in THEIR wallet.

As such, they are not taught true social values - concern, caring, nurturing, providing for others.

It is a truly self-centered generation raised by the left.

I am seeing this everywhere and I think it is way creepy.

Dogs cats, all manners of pets get the attention that needs to be lavished on the next generation

....that’s why we adore our cat. Haaahaaa!!!!

Seriously, some cute stories are nice but I agree with you some of the adoration for their animal is sickening. We have just over 40 acres and everyone that comes with their annoying dog thinks we need one. Some from down the road visit here and there and are a pain when they are pinned and bark all day while owners are working.

I like animals.

That said, I can understand some of the revuslion that other cultures have, especially these days, over the sickening fawning that occurs over pets.

In July both our cats suddenly died. One had lived over 20 years, the other for 15.

A week later we took home a twice rescued cat (woman with cat married man with pit bull that nearly killed the cat before being dragged off; I would have shot the dog).

She has been with us for seven months. We love her as a pet and believe finding her was meant to be (the vet who euthanized the others saved the life of the cat we have now and gave her to us.

Spinster stereotypes aside, in my opinion cat owners are more realistic about their pets not serving as child substitutes. I could be wrong.

Just as well they're not having children. My grandchildren will be happy to fill in for the missing ones.

This is not too surprising. I like the NatGeoWild programs of THE INCREDIBLE DR. POL. My wife and I sit slackjawed at some of the tears and pathos exhibited by pet owners, men and women, over their ailing pets.

You don’t indicate what these women said that caused you to think that their dogs are what is ‘really important’ in their lives.

Maybe it’s just easier, among a group of people who may not be real intimates, to make conversation about pets.

The destruction of civilization is discussed quite brilliantly by Ayn Rand. Just one brief example:

"From the first catch-phrases flung at a child to the last, it is like a series of shocks to freeze his motor, to undercut the power of his consciousness.

'Don't ask so many questions, children should be seen and not heard!'–

'Who are you to think? It's so, because I say so!'–

'Don't argue, obey!'–

'Don't try to understand, believe!'–

'Don't rebel, adjust!–

'Don't stand out, belong!'–

'Don't struggle, compromise!'–

'Your heart is more important than your mind!'–

'Who are you to know? Your parents know best!'–

'Who are you to know? Society knows best!'–

'Who are you to know? The bureaucrats know best!'–

'Who are you to object? All values are relative!'–

'Who are you to want to escape a thug's bullet? That's only a personal prejudice!'"

My wife goes on about this every Independence Day and New Years Day with all the fireworks booming away outside.

I’ve told her every year since we met, I do this every year to honor our founders and to scare away evil spirits at the start of the new year and I’m not going to stop because the f***ing DOGS are “anxious.”

My GSD’s good with it, it’s the black lab who’s a nutcase. The new GSD didn’t seem to mind. So I usually nuke ‘em with a little trazodone and let the festivities proceed.

I had a friend with a black lab. One July 4, the dog was so disturbed she jumped through a big glass picture window, trying to get away. They had to track her down, and get a new window :-)
