"Some smart people have analyzed the toilet paper hoarding and concluded it isn’t that at all. Their view is that there are two “channels” of TP production – commercial and domestic. The TP manufactured for commercial purposes is more utilitarian and less luxurious, is made to fit more industrial dispensing methods and is consumed by the pallet. Domestic TP is designed to appeal to one’s sense of comfort and luxury, a single roll at a time and is available in small multi-roll packs, generally.
Only a few manufacturers produce for both demand streams, and there is no simple conversion of one stream into the other to meet fluxuating demand. The result is that people are no longer needing to use TP when they’re out and about at work, at school, shopping, all the usual things. Instead, they’re confined to their homes and the vast majority of TP demand is now placed on the domestic stream.
This isn’t actually a hoarding phenomenon, with people cramming closets and storage units full of multi-packs of domestic TP rolls. Nor are they using more TP than usual. Instead, they’re NOT using the abundant supply of commercial TP because they’re not in the usual places to need to do so.
Eventually, the production of TP for the domestic stream could ramp up to meet the demand, but manufacturers need to anticipate whether things will return to normal before that might happen. That would leave an over-supply for a diminished domestic demand just as people are back to consuming the TP in the commercial stream.
Supply and demand will always come into balace over time.

This is correct. I get emails from a company called Webstaurant. When the shelves were bare we simply ordered the larger commercial rolls from them. They don’t fit into your typical residential wall mount. It’s a two-handed unroll operation but, we have plenty on hand.
That commercial toilet paper is awful stuff...always hated it.
How many people do you know who take a dump at work?

That’s a very personal question. I’m sure a certain amount of such events happen at work.
You can still buy large commercial rolls and store. Large rolls can be converted to small rolls by using a drill and “spinning off” the larger roll. Or build a large roll dispenser for the bathroom.
I’ve saw people coming back from the store with enough to last a year.

I don’t know ... I just looked at the Webstaurant web site. Every kind of TP was marked as “out of stock”. Every single one!
My niece is often late for family get-togethers. My sister-in-law explained it’s because her police officer boyfriend has to poop first when he gets home from work, lol.
As the expression goes: I vow to never work on their time or poop on mine.

When I was a kid, my brother had a book of TV bloopers. In a man on the street interview (live TV, before videotape), a local reporter was stopping people walking by to ask them what they did for a living.
In a slow spell, the only person available was an 8 year old boy. Desperate to avoid dead air, he asked the boy what his father did for a living.
Boy: He works in a factory.
Reporter: What do they make there?
Boy: Light bulbs and toilet paper, I think.
Reporter: That’s odd. How do you know that?
Boy: Well, that’s he takes out of his lunch box every night.

I haven’t looked at it recently. We ordered from them early on when the local shelves were bare. They had plenty at that time.
I guess we weren’t the only ones who looked to online commercial suppliers.
My daughter ran out the other day and had to borrow some. My son, who lives not far from her found some at a store and got her taken care of.
It sounds like supply is trickling back.
If only idiot legislators would roll back their economically illiterate price gouging laws?
