During the Reagan years, one of the tactics that helped to bring down the Soviet Union was the intentional "leaking" of information about advanced weapons that we possessed, or were under development. We had no such weapons, but the Soviets didn't know that. They spent exorbitant amounts of money trying to develop countermeasures or duplicate these supposed weapon systems (which couldn't possibly work from a technological standpoint.)
