Retracing the footprints of time
Alberta Report (via Web Archive) ^ | September 9, 1996 | Steve Sandford

Posted on 09/30/2004 7:56:25 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

In an otherwise unremarkable gravel bluff on the banks of the Bow River in Calgary, University of Alberta researchers Jiri Chlachula and Alan Bryan believe they have unearthed the remains of what could be the oldest human artifacts in North America, the pair announced this month. If substantiated, the discovery pushes back the known date of human settlement in North America by several thousand years. Other earth scientists are sceptical about the find's authenticity: U of A geomorphologist Rob Young describes it as "based only on pure speculation." ...Comments Prof. Young: "Any dude could have put that rock there."

"[I]t is known that much earlier, from around 45,000 to 21,600 B.C., the continent teemed with animal species, including giant lions, bears, several species of elephants, muskox and camels. That suggests humans could have survived comfortably--had any been present."

Dead link:
Ancient stone tools chip away date of early humans' arrival
by Margaret Munro

web archive version
Recently, Dr. Chlachula and his colleagues have discovered three more sites containing what they believe are preglacial stone tools. One set of choppers and scrapers, described in the current edition of The Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, was found in a gravel pit near the town of Grimshaw in northern Alberta. The other tools were unearthed last summer at two locations west of Lethbridge. All of them, says Dr. Chlachula, indicate that humans roamed through the Prairies between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago... Dr. Richard Morlan, curator of paleo-environmental studies at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Que., says he has no reason to doubt Dr. Chlachula. Few people in the world, says Dr. Morlan, can match the 36-year-old researcher's expertise. Professor Nat Rutter, the former head of geology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, agrees, noting that Dr. Chlachula has three PhDs and extensive field experience in both old world and new world archaeology... Prof. Rutter, at the University of Edmonton, also has much confidence in his research skills. "Jiri's work embarrassed a lot of other people," he says, because it suggests that Canadian archaeologists have been looking in the wrong place for human artifacts and they should be hunting underneath glacial deposits. "They may not admit it," says Prof. Rutter, "but they're all out there looking now."
And since this is from 1999, those artifacts are up to 40,005 years old... ;')

(Going from memory) Current estimates on existance of "modern man" go back approx. 50,000 years..

Judging from that, given a means of travel to the North American continent, inhabitence by early human is possible..

Next question is, why isn't there more evidence of their existence ?
If conditions were good, ( hunting, etc..) then such a population, even a small one, would have thrived and grown..
Thus, there should be ample evidence of pre-glacial habitation..

I'll have to take this one with a grain of salt..
Possible, but not likely..

I'll ping blam as well, I'm sure he has a number of topic links to post regarding your question.

Briefly, the idea that the spread of modern humans across the Earth began about 50,000 years ago is part of the Replacement model, which I don't accept anyway.

The other problem -- that there isn't more evidence -- is easy to explain. There is and has been plenty of evidence, but it was rejected on a priori grounds under the "Clovis First and Only" bias (I call it a bias because it was never a scientific theory). Here's a quickie about the Calico site (not cats) as an example. Tom Dillehay suffered ad hominem attacks for 20 years over his findings at Monte Verde, which are now accepted as the consensus. Ironically, I think the NAGPRA will lead to many such findings, pushing back human antiquity in the Americas.

Hope this helps.

Site Sheds Light on Human Arrival

ALLENDALE, S.C. (AP) - Some chipped tools and stone flakes found on a hill above a remote and wooded stretch of the Savannah River may show humans arrived in America about 3,000 years earlier than first thought.

Researchers have generally accepted that the first humans came to America as primitive hunters from Asia 12,000 years ago. But the South Carolina finds are the latest evidence that the continent was inhabited 15,000 years ago, well before the end of the last Ice Age around 10,000 years ago, archaeologists say.

"It is now reasonable to think of humans living on this landscape perhaps 15,000 to 20,000 years ago," said University of South Carolina archaeologist Albert Goodyear, who is helping to excavate the site. "It's the dawn of a new chapter in what was already a good book."

Coupled with mounting evidence of early human activity from scattered locations including a gravel pit in Virginia, a cave in Pennsylvania and a bog in Chile, the stone tools excavated in South Carolina suggest that human populations were spread across both continents 15,000 years ago.

Last year, a University of Oklahoma archaeologist suggested some broken stone tools found in the northwestern part of the state could be at least 22,000 years old.

The sites are so far apart that the earliest visitors could only have arrived earlier than once thought, or reached the Americas by more than one route, some researches theorize.

Goodyear and his team of archaeologists first uncovered the tools three years ago along a section of the river in Allendale County owned by Clariant, a Swiss-based chemical company.

Microscopic analysis of the stone chips confirmed that they could only have been created by human activity. The area may have served as a sort of workshop, where prehistoric people made the implements they needed for working wood and scraping animal hides.
